This is a follow-on to my hand made fan grill thread...

I've started shopping metal to use to try to make this fan grill. Right now, I'm torn between to metals.
    option 1
I can get a 12"x12" 1.5mm thick peice of mirror finish aluminum for $20+shipping.

option 2 (the one my wife likes, because it's different)
I can get a 6"x6" .8mm thick peice of mill finish titanium for $17+shipping

Has anyone tried working with titanium? This is grade 2, and not intended for "parts that need high strength under high heat and stress"

I love shopping on McMaster-Carr! I looked at using cartridge brass, but a 12x12 square of that was almost $50!

What about buying some 1mm or less mill finish aluminum or steel. You know, the kind that doesn't cost a recockulous amount of money. The kind you can always polish yourself.

Or go ahead and use titanium. Because when I think of a fan grille, I think bulletproof.

Dude, go to home depot and for a couple of bucks you can get a sheet of 26 something guage of plain sheet metal. Bulletproof? We are talking about about a fan grill right?

we had a discussion about Ti not that long ago, aparrently it has very similar propertys to steel regarding hardness as long as there is no Oxygen in the Ti alloy that you choose.

Personally I think I'd go with the Titanium, purely because its different, light, hard.

Well considering Titanium weighs almost twice as much as Aluminum, and have a hardness of 6 (Compared to a diamonds 10) and aluminum got approx 2.75, I would surely go for aluminum. It's also very difficult to make Titanium look nice. Whereas Aluminus is easily polished to chrome like effect.

Yes, we did have that conversation, didn't we? Oh, I think that might earn something for m0ng0lh0rde....wait, here it is... oh yeah... :search: There ya go! (this is only in reference to "has anyone worked with it," because that topic was all of 2 weeks ago).

Anyhow, can't wait to see what it looks like when done! And if your computer is ever shot in the fan...you'll know it's still ok.
