While they might say it's single use, it's anything but, I've bought and resold a used DTK off eBay when I bought my first elite and it worked fine.

Actually there's nothing stopping you using more, it's just you can only have two 16Gb devices attached at one time. If you have a load of USB sticks lying about you can use as many as you like to get all your data off.

Only problem is some data is non transferable such as Rock Band saves :grr:

Rock Band 3 will absorb your saves and make them USB stick friendly...

not the perfect answer but it's a solution

Retailer GAME has confirmed that the Xbox 360 S will include a data transfer kit that can be used to port all your existing game saves and DLC to the new machine.

“The new Xbox will have a data migration kit so getting all that gaming goodness out of your old hard drive will be a breeze,” GAME claimed via Twitter.

Of course, this isn’t a huge amount of help to those hoping to trade-in their existing machine against a redesigned model. In this instance the best option will be to use 16GB USB Flash drives to manually port data to a PC. This can then be transferred back to the new machine via the same method.

Please make sure your machine is updated with the latest firmware or else USB Flash support will not be enabled.

Note that some content will need to have its licence digitally transferred is users want to access it when not connected to the internet. Details about that process can be found here.

I'm on my fourth 360 and while this new slim looks great, i'm gonna give it a good 6 months before considering a purchase because by then I'm sure any potential problems will have shown up. Hopefully, it will all work out great though.

When I bought my elite when it first came out GAME allowed people to delay the trade in, so I got the full trade in amount for my old xbox when I sold it to them. I imagine they're doing something similar with the slim.

Yeh, because they had 45nm and Wireless N back then. Sigh.

they had built in wireless, 250gb hard drives and quiet fans back then all the same. couldnt give a crap what nm of processor they used they still could have cooled it adequately and released a reliable console

Just read on engadget that it now has a temp sensor that will switch the 360 off and display a message on screen if it detects that it's over heating in order to protect the 360.

When I replaced my (dead) launch 360 with an elite I transferred all my licences across on xbox.com.

MK was probably a bad choice of example as that is still in my list, but there are others which aren't

Going through the list of my previously downloaded content to add to my download queue quite a few came back as no longer available (not sure which ones unfortunately, as the list helpfully said I'd downloaded something and the date I'd purchased it but not what the title was, just that it was no longer available).

If you're having problems re-downloading any paid DLC, contact Microsoft and they'll sort that out. Whatever is happening is not down to their T&C, it's a bug.

Don't get me wrong, MS seriously screwed up with the first Xbox 360. But a 250GB HDD back then would have added a lot to the price. And tbh, 20GB is still doing me fine on my original 360.

They could have done a better job of the cooling, but saying this the the console they should have released makes no sense, since it is physically impossible.

Tbh, I would have prefered the 360 being bigger and better cooled, but that isn't what they did with the S, so the two aren't comparable. And it's nothing to do with quieter fans. They used the quietest that would still work. The only reason the newer one is quiter is because of the die shrink and the integrated CPU and GPU, which, again, were impossible back then (at least realistically impossible).

the only thing they couldnt have released was wireless N at the time. the rest they should have gotten right from the start. 20gb was only a trick to get you to buy a bigger HDD later on. and cooling shouldnt have been a problem

How can they "trick" you into buying a bigger HDD by giving you a smaller one? Back in the day when it was first released, 20Gb was very much overkill.

The reason we require more space now is because there are obviously, a lot more games, which means more arcade games, more saves, more DLC, more demos. Arcade games are also a good one to be looking at. Back at release, Arcade games were limited to 50Mb I believe. As MS saw that arcade games were very popular and there was some very good quality stuff being released, they upped the memory cap to allow even bigger and better games. Now instead of 50Mb (maximum) arcade games we have arcade games that are coming in at over 1Gb, that's 20x bigger, which is one of the big reasons why people need bigger hard drives for their 360s now.

The point has also been made that a 120/250Gb laptop hard drive would have been incredibly expensive. For the first year or two, 20Gb was more than adequate for most people, having a larger hard drive at that stage would have been pointlessly expensive for the consumer.

ok yeh ill give yous that on the hard drive, thought about it again, had forgotten that even the PS3 only got 250GB recently. had a think back and my laptop i bought a year after the 360 release was only 40gb. they could have made the move to 60gb earlier I do think though

this new thing, where the 360 shuts down if it over heats, i have an spare oldish xbox that does the same, it shows 2 red sections and shuts down when it gets too hot, i dont think its anything radically new

Classy. Saves money on UPS collections for them, but the consumer still ends up with a console that can't manage its own thermals.

Polishing a turd springs to mind here.

I guess I wasn't thorough enough. Per Newegg.com prices in USD:

    Slim 120GB PS3 - $299
    Normal 250GB PS3 - $349

Arcade 360 (with Banjoe Kazooie and Viva Pinata) - $149
    Elite 120GB 360 bundle (with Halo 3:ODST and Forza 3) - $249
    250GB 360 bundle (with second controller) - $399
    Slim 250GB 360 - $299

My comparison was between both slim versions. Not only is it hard to compare bundles with standalone consoles, but why bother about prices on the old consoles which we already know about. Comparing just the slims, each sold with one controller and generally no extras and at the same price, can be very objective this way. Comparing feature for feature it seems to really come down to Blu-ray versus 130GB of additional storage. My personal preference is for Blu-ray, since it saves me $80+ on a standalone player. To be a "spoilt child" I also like to add the many months of enjoyment I've had with the slim PS3 before there was even a 360 equivalent, but that's much more subjective.
