In my opinion it's possibly too late for Microsoft to overtake Google in the search engine world- they seem to keep releasing new engines and touting them as just as good as any other, yet now they're releasing a Google-killer? To be fair, it could, and quite possibly might be a better engine than Google's- but that's not enough to switch people over at this point in time. People have gotten used to Google being the best and aren't really ready for another company to come along and tell them to use theirs instead. This is a big year for Microsoft, and from what I've seen it should be a good one. The problem they have is not being able to settle with anything though. The new line of products they release this year (Vista, Office 07, WMP11 etc) need to be standard-setters and implament the 'framework' for the future releases instead of creating something completely fresh each time. Once they've found the perfect combination, which I'm sure we're all hoping they've done this time, they'll only have to make minor changes to the product each time to keep it inline with technology. On a side note, I really hope they sort out the Hotmail service soon. Even after they revamped it to feel more paralleled with Outlook 03, it really does seem a bit naff. They've missed out the basic features which Gmail and other services thrive on providing, and so I can only hope they're planning a newer version to prevent all their users from flooding over to Google. <A88>
What do you mean. If Microsoft can pull this off it will be a great thing, it will help push search engines onto the next level. Google is fantastic, but in truth you can often spend a lot of time jumping from URL to URL when trying to find something specific. Good to see MS set goals and I hope they achieve them.
MS products are seldom the best thig out there, but they are always from MS and therefore a de facto standard. Google is the top of the search engine heap because they have the best product. Yes, brand loyalty plays some part in it, but I think that they cancl eachother out in that respect. Or, to put it simply, I don't think MS could build a better product than Google if their lives depended on it.
Google may be the best solution we have at the moment, but it falls way short of being great. Are you suggesting that no one tries to develop the search engine beyond the current model, I for one look forward to the day I type in a reqest and get taken directly to the information I want without having to trawl through site after site. MS have the finacial clout to make this a reality, I'm not saying they will succeed, but they are in a better position than most others to bring this to fruition.
No one questions Microsoft's financial clout, but money alone will not make a better search engine. That is going to take a truly new approach to data management, and an innovative new way of understanding what the user is looking for. In my mind, Microsoft has ceased to be an innovator nd rather has become a technology aggregator. Two recent examples... IE 7 adds many fo the best features from Firefox and Opera, such as tabbed windows, and alos patches some more security holes, but is hardly an innovative new product, yet no one questions that it willbe the dominant browser for years to come (or at least until 8 comes out) Vista's new features are mostly good ideas that have been available as third party or open source apps for some time and collects them together as an integrated OS. Not really new, but we're going to be stuck with it. A better search engine is an interesting animal because it's not a product in the classical sense. Search engines are free / ad supported and there is only minimal distribution costs. You don't have to make and package software, or build hardware with all the capitol costs involved. Ok, I'm not making a lot of sense here, I apologize. Let me try again. The next big thing in search engines will be a lot like the last. A small, start up company that no one has ever heard of doing somthing completly different. It won't be MS because they ceased innovating long ago, and it won't be Google because they are locked into an archetecture that has worked very well for them.
When I was saying about having the financial clout, I was reffering to the fact they can procure the best minds in the industry. They are making a bold statement when they talk about brining out a better than google search engine, I do in fact hope that they are able to back it up with a finished product that is in fact better. I hope they are inovative and think out of the box, I do however take on board your point about IE7 which was just a rehash of already available tech. Vista, yes there will be many features that have been seen elsewhere, but lets wait untill we see the finished product before we judge. MS is still capable of inovation, they just have to choose to be so.
Dream on... Sorry, not seeing it. Google is not exactly sitting on its laurels either. And if Google throws up too many URLs for you, it's because you did not use the best keywords or delineate the search parameters enough. It is a powerful tool. But you have to use its full range of Boolean parameters and Google-specific delineators, and you have to pick the right keywords.
I have to say, that 99 time out of 100 I'll find what I'm looking for within seconds, but that down to me using google properly. There is the odd occasion where it's not that simple. The problem is I've watched many a people use a search engine and just give up after an hour of link hopping, the majority of people out there type in what they want and then have to search through the plethora of links provided, many of which have no resemblance of the search topic. You are right though, most of the issues are down to the user not the search engine, but if someone can improve on the current method of searching then good on them.
Yup would have to agree, the only time tools dont get used is if someone doesn't know how to use it, it may be the best tool in the world but if you give it to a novice he'll play with it but wont know what to do. Google is a very powerfull tool but it needs to have a bit more user ineracion to help people use it better. I don't think you can get better then google what can they do to make a better search engine at the end of the day its down to the user wether they find what they want. If your looking for apples you don't type in banana and hope for the best. Also who's gonna say just MSN search it lol Google it just sounds better
Google ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!! used it since... forever.... it is my first search engine and still my favorite. M$ only survives on my computer because i cant play the games i want on Linux.
Google was once the underdog, unknown to a lot of people. So possibly MS can overcome Google, but it's going to take a while. I loved Google for being the underdog and coming out on top, but now they're expanding a little too far, I think. A Google OS? It looks like MS and Google are going to do battle on every front... This may turn out well for consumers, or not...
whats wrong with google's politics? as far as i can see they are better/no worse than MS's. as for MS overtaking google...i doubt it....once a product gains market dominance, its hard fo shift...like that damed iPod....but thats another matter.
I used adwords on my site but they didn't like the links to bladed weapons and firearms. They preach freedom of speech but they don't practice it. oints at google.cn: No problem, their choice..I'll use non-Communist services and encourage others to do the same.
i think this whole antitrust thingy is bs...its Microsofts OS. THEY GET TO PUT WHATEVER THE HELL THEY WANT. Last time I heard, competition was a good thing.
