My take on wireless is that it adds another lag factor to response time.

yeah it may only be off by 1/100th a second, but thats still one frame lag :/

but thats being super picky, for someone who isnt that good at MP games.

also, batteries = weight, I hate having a heavy mouse, I want one that is light so that it can glide on the mousepad.

That's my fear at the moment also.
As mentioned; Battery life, weight, and another thing: the always on sensor of the Razer (no hibernate = dead batteries fast)
You mean something like this? (@2540 dpi) If it's anything like the one I got with my Graphire 2 tablet it uses the tablet to sense the mouse motion. The tablet then must be used as a mouse pad.

All you need is a small pendulum mounted in such a way that it drives a tiny electric generator. If mounted in a balanced location in a suitably weighty mouse, you'd probably be hard pressed even to notice its presence.
Doesn't need to be a laser, an LED would do. In any event, you certainly don't need LEDs if you have a laser. The kinetic power obviously wouldn't power all this directly - it would charge a battery. I don't know how much power you can realistically generate with a kinetic charging device, but MS claims its wireless mice consume just 11.7 mW when active. That isn't a huge amount of power to generate IMHO.

However, on reconsideration, you'd be far better off mounting a small photocell on the mouse somewhere to charge it from ambient light.

:eeek: :waah: I'm a lefty! I support Razer partly because they make/made great ambidextrous mice (not just their lower models like Logitech does) :sigh:

I rather like the look of it. The interchangeble side panels should be interesting.

Also, looking around MS's website, they are bringing back the Intellimouse 3.0! In all black! :naughty:

I was referring to the status LEDs and whatnot that a lot of mice have these days :). Of course, you don't need these sort of features in a mouse but then you'll just end up with a basic product which only really has one selling point- a feature which realistically can't be carried over into more advanced products. Even if the kinetic power charged the battery, it's still an idea which has been tried and tested in a lot of products out there and as mentioned, isn't often immitated as it's more hassle than it's worth.

    "Customizable Buttons
Two removable side button panels give you options for different hand sizes or preferences, and all seven buttons are programmable—store up to five profiles in mouse memory."

this mouse can be used by people like you :D

i think this will be my future mouse :D

i once had a Microsoft cordless desktop, never again will i buy Microsoft

on top of that, i hate wireless, serious gamers don't use wireless ;), its another cause of hassle, and such a waste of money too

I am fully wired now, and i haven't looked back for a second

You could use something like induction, and have a large pad on your desk (or even mod your desk to be 1 big induction coil thing) however that might interrupt the wireless signals, and its a form of EMF

"right handed comfort design" = left handed awkward. At first glance it looks almost symmetrical but it's that "almost" that makes things uncomfortable to use. It's like getting into a car after a much taller (or much shorter) person has adjusted the seat, mirrors, and steering wheel - I could probably drive it without re-adjusting those but why would I?

If I had the mouse & tablet I pointed to I think it would be my next mod (put something like a Diamondback shell on it). Unfortunately my Graphire 2 pad is just a little small and (@ 1000 dpi) not near the 2540 dpi of the 4D mouse (though I turn my Copperhead down to 1600 dpi)

Couldn't agree more. I've bought Intellimice almost exclusively for a while now - the build quality is great and some of the lower-end models are pretty good value.

I owned a MS Intellimouse Explorer (the first one) for ages until I decided to replace it with an MX1000 and I ahve to say that in terms of plain, solid reliability I cannot fault the old MS one at all it was a fine mouse, still is in fact, a friend is using it while he gets the money together for a decent replacement for his no name, came with the pc one.

Not too sure about the glow on this one though, would be nice to be able to turn it off or change the colour, not a difficult task for most of us who know what we would be doing in there I know but still the option from standard would be nice.

They've got something like that for optical mice. I dunno what kinetic power is all about, but it has some sort of wireless inductive thing, and the mousepad spits off something that it can use.

devonfore - mice have always used optical tech. Even ball mice. The ball would rotate a spoked wheel, which an optical encoder deciphers to turn into movement.

I've never had great luck with wireless mice, nor have I never liked Logitech ones (they just don't sit right in my hand). I got an Intellimouse and never looked back. Sans glowage, this might tickle my fancy if I still did a decent amount of FPS gaming. I've got two of their optical ones... I can't stand even the red glow. One I took out the rear red LED and replaced the useful one with an infrared so it's totally stealth (doesn't work great on light surfaces though). The other I was going to do the same but I was lazy, so I just opened it up and bent around the rear glowy one so it wasn't shining straight out the back. It gives off just enough light to know where it is at night.

Microsoft Intellimouse Opticals are as of yet the only mice i've found that sit in my hand well, being another left hander i'm severely crippled on choice (and I really can't get comfortable with a razor). I thought this would be the one, but although the design looks very un-biased it claims to be suited to right handers?! When will they all realise there is more than one left hander in the world, sheesh.

I've had an MS wireless optical mouse for several years now and the reliabilty of it is amazing. And the battery life, i forget it has batteries it gets changed so rarely, around every 6-10 months i'd say with standard AA batteries, and thats with at least 4 hours use a day, often much more.
