News Microsoft unveils Surface 3 tablet family

Between light weight games (fdl) and steam streaming for the heavier ones (civ/elite) I may have to buy one of these.
The only question now is; what do I do with my surface 2?

 

HP Pavilion X2 includes a keyboard/trackpad cover.

Just sayin'.

So it's £500, but with the cover and pen required to make it a useful creative/working tool it'll bump up to between £650-750.

Brilliant, as nice a bit of kit it will be (and passive cooling!) that's out of my price range for a tablet that will likely die a horrible death under the kind of stresses I put them through.

Ah well.

 

Just to say, you're the first one of the tech blogs I usually follow (Engadget, Verge, Trusted Reviews, Geeky Gadgets just to get a varied opinion!) that I have seen include a link to the official MS announcement, and to include the pricing of all of the "levels" beyond "starting at $499" (not to say that either were available at their time of writing of course)...

I was eyeing up the Xperia Z4 Tablet as a replacement to my aging and long-in-the-tooth Nexus 10, but this is actually very tempting purely for the "it's a real OS" angle... meaning I can plug regular USB devices in without having to faff around with USB OTG and shoddy driver support etc. Hell, even USB-dongle wireless headphones would work!

Adding a USB soundcard and MIXXX and this might even be a compelling replacement to my Tonium Pacemaker for DJing the local rock nightclubs...

Edit: it's also the same aspect ratio as my digital camera, and being full Windows it would be compatible with USB colour calibration... dongley... thingies... (assuming the results would be acceptable). I'd be very interested to see how it handles Lightroom CC with 6Kx4K raws...

I'm a big fan of the Surface Pro 3, and I do like the idea of a cheaper/less powerful version. Ideal for folks who will find the touchscreen interface much more intuitive, but don't need the full iWhatever processor.

Still a bit expensive though...~£480 (with the keyboard) for the most basic model is alot to pay for such a "basic" spec machine.

 

The iPad is more expensive.

 

That depends on if you're comparing like for like, i think you get more for your shekels with a Surface 3, although i don't know how much usable more you get with a Surface as Windows has become rather portly in it's old age.

 

Windows 10 will take about 20Gb. I've got a Surface RT 64Gb loaded with all sorts of stuff and I still have 16Gb free... and that's with the recovery partition. Should work if you don't use it as a storage device for your porn collection.
