Microsoft's security problems are only going to get worse. The company designs its products to work together, creating a Microsoft monoculture. Because there are so many shared paths from Internet Explorer, Outlook, and Windows Media Player into the operating system, if you exploit one, you exploit them all. Vista promises to continue this consolidation by making the operating system the glue that connects users to their PCs, televisions, PDAs, and portable music and video players.
Slate Article: Microsoft vs. Computer Security

An interesting article written four years after Microsoft announced Security being its top priority.

Yep... it's a known fact that having IE and explorer as one was probably the worst decision in computer history. Remedy? Put EVERYTHING in one app, that way hopefully when you have a crash, you go down too quickly to have any other adverse side-effects of the exploit.

Good one Microsoft... I'd love to have my computer crash and not being able to finish my toast, as obviously any such bread-crisping devices would be on my network as well.

In other news, two new WMF vulnerabilities found. Luckily nobody is affected, as absolutely nobody uses the damn thing in the first place.

Yes, but did the article mention the fact that explorer now runs in it's own protected memory space, and nearly every interconnected piece of Windows is now seperated in some form.

been watching the vista development videos... the one about implementing the sound drivers was the most interesting because it explained how vista works "behind the scenes"

dumbed down 10 fold it comes to if a componant driver crashes.. for example sound. A window will pop up, inform you what happened and then repair it. 9/10 times windows does this without interferring your work (except the window popup). It also doesn't take down anything else.

Adam L. Penenberg needs to check on new developments and adjust accordingly

WHAT?! You mean you want him to adjust his opinions to reflect things since WindowsME? Awww, come on, Fev...then they wouldn't be the devil as much anymore! And it's not cool if you don't write Microsoft as M$ and bash them at every opportunity!

We don't have time for rational solutions... :D
