But as the Inquirer points out, Bill's quarters are 6 months long:

PEOPLE GETTING THEIR hopes up for an early release of Windows XP for 64 bit chips can relax a bit longer, they'll probably not be surprised to learn.
According to sources at Intel Taiwan, the earliest we can expect to see such an operating system is at the end of the first quarter of next year.

But, the same source added, Microsoft does not talk in terms of quarters of a year, but halves.

So it's entirely possible that the launch of such an operating system could slip right up to the 31st of May next year.

Frankly, we're totally amazed that Microsoft is allowed to get away with such slack launch dates. Both Intel and AMD, never mind Via, would have their respective knuckles rapped if they failed to ship chips by their due dates.

We suppose here at the INQ it is something to do with the fact that Microsoft is based near Seattle, way too close to the international date line for definite dates.

So, if it does slip to the end of May, it's going to get pipped by that 'other' blockbuster due out that month - and people genuinely can't wait for that...;)
