I have been in contact with microsoft technical support since Wednesday March 14th. I tried to convert a basic disk to dynamic disk in vista premium, and was given an error message telling me that dynamic disks are not supported in windows vista.

if you run diskpart this is what you get

    Code:
    Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6000]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    C:\Users\CyberSol>diskpart

    Microsoft DiskPart version 6.0.6000
    Copyright (C) 1999-2007 Microsoft Corporation.
    On computer: MEDIACENTER

    DISKPART> list disk

Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt
      -------- ---------- ------- ------- --- ---
      Disk 0 Online 233 GB 1177 KB
      Disk 1 Online 466 GB 1017 KB
      Disk 2 Online 75 GB 74 GB
      Disk 3 Invalid 75 GB 0 B *
      Disk 4 Online 72 GB 993 KB
      Disk 5 Online 37 GB 993 KB

    DISKPART> select disk 2

Disk 2 is now the selected disk.

    DISKPART> convert dynamic

The command you selected is not available with this version of Windows.

    DISKPART> select disk 3

Disk 3 is now the selected disk.

    DISKPART> import

    Virtual Disk Service error:
The dynamic disks are not supported by this operating system.

The arguments you specified for this command are not valid.

    DISKPART>
    but when you go to
    http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/20c44bd2-a865-4d1c-a2c7-75d6533acd4f1033.mspx
    and http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/4605a967-060a-490e-808b-f20438f621ce1033.mspx
    and http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/f89a592d-5b47-4cc9-b82c-79ed7694bd9a1033.mspx
they say dynamic is available in all versions of vista.

What I can not find is anyplace stating that i can't do this in premium.

I was on the phone with technical support while they took over my computer and tried to convert my disks to dynamic. They tried to do this over the course of 3 days and had the same results every time and were baffled.
They finally said they were going to recreate my system setup to see what the problem was. They said they would contact me. A week went by and i heard nothing from them. Finally I emailed them to ask what was going on.
Then told me to run mpsrpt and send the log in. I did that, and yesterday I got this email.

So, did I get screwed? Is there any solution other then buying ultimate for $400 or switching to opensource software?
    Is what microsoft did legal?
It took them weeks to tell me that I need ultimate to use dynamic disks.
Up until that time everyone I worked with was nice and courteous, AND convinced that dynamic disks should work even though i was running premium.

I think it has its uses for RAID, but I've never found a use for dynamic discs over basic.

They screwed up, they apologised, they apologised again, they acknowledged they hadn't done their job properly, they asked you how they can help you further, and even offered to help you complain. And now you're saying "is it legal for people to make mistakes?"

Also, check the wording on those three links you posted. Those are glossary pages, and all say "applies" to all versions, not "available on". I can't find anywhere that says which versions of Vista support dynamic disks, which is presumably why the tech support people got stuck too.
