    Hey there...

Long time no see... so I've got a 6600GT from Gainward in my system atm and I'm looking to upgrade a bit, although I don't have that much money... I was thinking about dual 8600 GTs but I'm not sure...

I'm not a hardcore gamer, I play a bit of Oblivion and have FS2004 / X on my system and that's it... what I mostly do is graphics... I was looking into dual 8600gts because of FSX but I'm not sure if it's a wise choice or not...

So that's where you lot come in ^^ Got any thoughts or recommendations?

    Cheers

    Fred

I don't think teh 8600 is too great, so personally I'd just go for one 8800GTS. They're pretty cheap nowadays.

For the same price of 2 8600GT's, you'll get a single, 640MB 8800GTS, which is a great card for the cash.

^ Yup, the 320mb 8800GTS is miles faster than the 8600 in every way. Definitely worth the extra cash. :)

^Agreed, i am a 8800GTS 320Mb owner in my daily drive and its great.

Plus the 8600's have a dodgy memory interface or something like that basically a total waste of your money buying two to SLi!

Okay, so an 8800 GTS 320MB it is... I just checked, it's only 10 Euro more than two 8600 GT's... but then comes the next question:

Will my trusty Enermax 350 Watts power supply do?

My current setup is: A64 3800+, air cooling, 1g DDR, A8N-SLI, DVD drive + lots of USB stuff attached...

Now I have no idea how much power these new cards consume... would I be better off with a 400w supply? I don't really want a new one... :worried:

Cheers for your thoughts til now ^^

Im gonna have to go ahead and say no, a 350watt powersupply won't do you much good... A 500watt powersupply is really the minimum for desktops now imo.

Given the ridiculous TDP of the G80's, I suspect you'll need something like a 480W PSU Fred, it's a pain, but there we are. :(

I would get a 500W, as a 480W is, I beleive, to close to the exactly what you need.
I personally like to get more then what I need, because you never know what upgrade you will do in the next 3-4 years.

Not to mention some naughty PSU manufacturers may be tempted to "over hype", shall we say, their performance figures.

I would go for an 8600GT, which is a teeny bit slower than the GTS, or 8800GTS. Go for the latter, amazing card.

Sorry, it's NOT a "tenny" bit slower. It is MUCH slower.
Also all the the mainstream models from ATI or Nvidia, all have crappy fans that sounds quiet for the first 2-3months, then it end up being an electric saw or a jackhammer, so you will need to spend a nice 50-60$ on a new fan. Not worth the trouble and price. Geforce 8800GTS 320MB or if you can push/stretch your budget more, you can get the 640MB model.
