I didn't know really where to post this, so I posted it here. Right, I have a Phillips Midi system, It got bought 1998/99, so it's getting on now. It has three output sockets on the back. Two are labeled "Line Out, L, R".. The manual claims these phono sockets were put there solely for satellite speakers... where do I get them, how powerful are they, and how much? There's another socket on there, I can't decide wether it's a phono socket or a SP/DIF socket. It's labelled Sub-Woofer. Again, Where can I get one, how powerful are they, and how much? Hmm. Owned it for ages and still don't know what half of the stuff does :-/, What I do know is that it was bloody expensive, £279!!
line outs are usualy line level outputs used to sending the signal to recording deviaces but in your case thay could be there to indeed run sattelite speakers or they may be variable level & you then hook them into a power amp & connect speakers to the power amp, get a 2 phon to head phone socket adpater, plug some headphones into it, then disconnect your speakers (do this while the power is off) then put your headphones on turn it on, put a cd in & see if the volume in the headphones increases as you turn it up, this will tell you if it does you have a variable level output & if not a fixed level, the volume will be really quiet though the line out so you can only do it with the speakers detatched. a subwoofer out is a phono socket & this sends the really meaty bass that your speakers can handle to a dedicates speaker & amp designed to shake your room, you can pick up a cheap & chearful one for £40 from richer sounds but its worth spending more & have a good quality subwoofer, then use a phont to phono cable to conenct to the system & the sub, not a 2 phono to 2 phono this is just one cable so one plug on eather end, then play a cd & alter the controls on the sub so you can just hear it above your main speakers, then turn it down a bit so it sounds like your speakers are producing the bass. they are really nice addidtions to your system unless you have a big pair of cerwin vega speakers or a pair of B & W floorstanders that answered your question?
thanks for your help, it's very much appreciated. it sort of answers my question. I plugged a pair of 1W speakers into the line out sockets (both speakers had the same phono connections) and they only made noise when the volume level was set to 1 or 2 (My stereo has volume levels 1 to 40). It seems the line out is variable level... what can I plug into it? I have some details on the line out and subwoofer out.. Line Out - 500mV, Subwoofer Out - 1.5 V what do they mean?
so your saying they made no noise above the 1 & 2 volume levels? if they do play music above the volume levels of 1 & 2 (im taking that 1 is the lowest, am i right about that? the reason i ask is on my technics compnent system it tell me in remaining DB my amp can produce) then i will give you more information about what can be plugged in, if not then i dunno
ok, do you get audio above those levels from the variable line outs? ps my amp ownz j00 306rms (its a technics component system & ti cost me like £600 so it should be good for the money)
I'm not sure, I have nothing to plug into those line out sockets, I'm pretty sure they're variable output though.
well if there variable then you should be able to source a pair of surround sound speakers from most places but make sure they are made for that hifi but you could walk into richer sounds tomorrow & come out with a sub, whack it into the sub out & enjoy the feeling of you furnature moving by itself /me misses his sub:cries: :cries: :cries:
Upon hooking an external tape deck up (It has a VU monitor on it) It turns out, it's a fixed-level output. If the volume knob is down to mute, nothing comes out, if its set to one or more, there's an output that doesn't increase when the volume is turned up Do you have an AIM or MSN contact I can talk to you by? Or an E-mail address?
right if you want to add another pair of speakers buy a cheap amp, connect the output from you philips system to the input of the tape loop on the amp, then you can turn them up & down independantly of the main system, richer sounds has some bargains on ampslifiers & speakers
