So I was sitting at home, relaxing after a night shift with the little one and the door goes with a loud bang, even though we have a fine doorbell. The guy at the door was an 'ex-lance corporal' who had just been released from the army. He was selling some 'military' crap; stuff like microfibre cloths, heat mats, car cleaning stuff although we have an empty driveway. He was pushy, rude and I found it incredibly uncomfortable to talk to him. What makes this worse is he became very antagonistic when I said I didn't have any change in which to buy his cheap tat. He started going on about what He done in the army after I had no to pressure me into feeling sorry enough to rip into my already empty pockets. I didn't buy anything, and he was an absolute ****hole. I have great respect for the military and all of the things they have to do to protect etc. I won't respect that guy though; and I heard many other people in the area had also had some problems with this guy or others like him. Then after his whole speech that didn't work I still wasn't interested so he started saying things under his breath like "what a waste of my..." like I couldn't hear him.
I thought that as well. I hate doorstop sellers, army or not. I think I should put a sign outside my door saying ' No canvassers, doorstop salesman or Jehovah's Witnesses'.
I am very thankful that my flats have a secure door and an intercom, the second that someone mentions that they are selling something you can just hang up.
i live in a block with 5 other flats and we don't get any door to door sellers. unfortunately someone seems happy to buzz in anyone who's leafleting so we have little piles of crap all over the stairs. I honestly struggle to see how door to door sellers get any significant sales, presumably older generations are more prone to buying from them?
With all due respect to all who serve, you chose to do it, I'm do not have to be guilt tripped into saying thank you and buying your crap! As for door to door sellers, I let the Mrs answer the door, I'm too nice to just close the door, she isn't
Unfortunately I'm the same. I've never been good at just slamming the door in people's faces; even if they're a massive tool.
Sounds like a scam to me, probably a bunch of toerags dressed in an Army getup going round in a van. When I've spoken to military folk looking for donations in the past at fairs and places like that they have been very well mannered, they have an image of honour and dignity they like to uphold.
I'm calling scam on his **** as well. He was not a polite person. He didn't really have an 'honourable' appearance either. He was just very antagonistic and uncomfortable to talk to. I can see why these guys are in our area though; I live in an part with many elderly or retired people.
Well as an active duty service member (although in another country) I will apologize for his stupidity. Rant/ If he is acting that way he is disgracing the military, also he should not be using that so you feel sorry for him if he served great thank him for his service but he should not use it in his pitch. Rant/
Psht.... you shouldn't apologize for their stupidity. If one of these guys come back I'm just going to say no and slam the door in his face.
Well they don't sound too good... I highly doubt it's a national thing but I'll keep an eye for them around here.
I think some years ago we had ex prisoners doing that, is this some charity like big issue thats sets this up. Anyway if he is having a hard time is it really to much to buy a couple of sponges?? But yea being rude is not on so he is not cut out to be a salesman..maybe try security work!
As an ex-door-to-door salesman, I'm hurt And the 'No canvassers, doorstop salesman or Jehovah's Witnesses' signs never deterred me. I always just saw them as a challenge.
Sounds like a poor seller, but not a scam I don't think - there's a back to work scheme running around here for convicts where they door-to-door cleaning products to get their first step on the ladder. Happy to buy a bundle of dishcloths/microfibres every few months to help them out.
I have steps coming up to my door, I think about 7 or 8, so it's quite high up, I don't get much past asking them if they've seen that bit in 300 where the man is standing by the edge of the big hole...
I always politely interrupt them just as they start their spiel with "before we go any further, please understand that I will not buy, or sign up for goods or services on my doorstep". That usually stops most of them in their tracks. The ones that continue reciting their script, without skipping a beat... well, let's just say I'm less polite.
I wouldn't have minded if he was polite, but he wasn't polite. I don't care how much he is 'struggling'; if he wanted my custom he should have been a better salesman. Also, I would've bought a pack of microfibre cloths because they're pretty decent, but I just didn't have the money on me.
