Seems like abit of a waste to start a new thread but I can't seem to find it anywhere.
Does anybody know the national min wage for a 17 year old? Starting a job at a tea/coffee place soon and the women said it was min. wage. (which dosent bother me as I dont need much money anyway.)

Asked lots of people but everybody says differently, decided it was best to ask here. I live in the united kingdom..

    Thanks for help.

Not a lot, something like £3.10 an hour.
Goes up to £4.60 an hour when you're 18.

    £3.53

I never understood why it's not across the board, is it to encourage hiring kids to get them experience?

It doesn't apply to apprentices; it's really to stop sweat-shops and commission- or tips-only "wages".

I understand the concept of the minimum wage, just not the age groups.

Why should you be paid less one day for the exact same job, then on your 18th / 22nd birthday suddenly you're worth more

People wouldn't find it acceptable to scale pay on gender so why's it OK with age?

At £5+ politicans fear that bright pupils will become dazzled by the high glamour of minimum wage and immediately leave school.

Well that makes some sense, but what about the 22 thing?

I'm just saying that if I was being paid less than the guy on the checkout across from me I'd be pissed right off.

    I'm still confused :sigh:

As much as Id like more Im not bothered, like I said, I dont really need much, just money in pocket for games/petrol (for when I start driving)

I just wish I could get EMA like 95% of my class, my parents income isnt high enough to give me £30 a week, yet other people in the class get that, what do they spend it on? Clothes, food etc...unfair :(

Exactly what my employer thinks. Hence I was on £6.42 an hour when I was 17 (same as other people doing the same job). But I didn't get a pay rise after my birthday!

Same here. It should beless than £30 (like £12-£15?) but for everyone in optional HE.

I really like that suggestion of it being lower, that way it makes it possible to actually do. Plus im sure it would persuade plenty of teenagers like myself to carry on with education. £50 a month for learning? Yes please.

Why should it be £12-£15 per week, i used to use the buses to get to and from college, the price of the bus per week is £18, so, one of the things EMA is supposed to help with is then pretty pointless.

Because £18 bus fayres a week is quite unusual - and quite a distance. The council will pay for your transport if you're actually that far away from the nearest school.

Why £30? That's an arbitrary number too.

It's £10/week here for buses for me. And you can apply to your local council for a travel grant anyways (£60 per term for me - bearing in mind I don't get EMA).

Should EMA make college free? No, but it should help.
