Now where to move? Will bit-tech let us have a place to keep the survival?
Now that the Creative is more or less dead..

I don't know much about this. What do we need for a home?

It didn't seem like any one ever played on it any way, Some one could get away with hosting it in home I suppose.

basicly before Pano makes me out to look mean.

This is a shopping cart on Multiplay.co.uk for a similar spec server that I am hosting for you right now. Not to mention they probably won't let you have 200+GB of backups of maps like you have now.

I might be keeping the server on and will see by Thursday what I want/can afford to do.
But even if I do keep it then I will be speaking to the people who I host servers for and saying "hey you know you would be paying £50 for this MC server right? Fancy giving £15 every month" least then the majority of the bill gets covered. With out me having to do it all the time.

As I have things to save for such as a new PC.

    Anyway working now, bye.

what a weird way to charge for a server. shouldnt the hardware usage be a set fee based on solely the hardware specs? why does it matter if its got a minecraft server or some other type of software running on it?

anyways, the hardware isnt the big thing here. a standard (decent) desktop will handle the server no problem. the big thing is up speed to your location. XM was able to provide such a high quality service because he had the speed to back it up. back when stickeh was hosting (and im not bashing on the guy at all), a lot of us US based players couldnt connect to the server because the lag was too great due to his low connection speed.

basically, anyone with a decent, high speed connection could host.

It's mainly done on the resources used.
E.g. Minecraft severs are so expensive because of the heavy RAM usage.

Where as for the same resources you could run 12 TF2/CSS Servers or even more I would Imagine.

i see. so they charge per server type because they know approximately how much resources a 20 player minecraft server is going to take up....

I'd offer to chip in a decent sum for hosting but currently it doesn't look like I'd be able to play on it for half the year.

Why did we move from XM's server again?

i think it was just because the blockjunkies server had a faster connection and more powerful hardware.

Basically because XM's server wasn't fast enough. It was stuttering and stalling, and 1.8 looked set to grind it to an ugly, train-wreck style halt.

I'd offer to host it myself on my spare hardware, but I don't think i have a connection that'll take it. (0.5mb upload. Might technically be fast enough, but BT would hate me.)

If it's hardware then I have a quad core PC I'd be willing to donate, would probably need a cash injection to get it set up properly though.

Soo basically quite a few of you want to play on a nice server with a good connection, but no one can donate a few quid a month to keep it running?

    Sad. :(

On a second look the server above seems to be awfully expensive for what it is tbh. When I was looking for a server I found at least two servers from respectable companies with up to 4096mb RAM for 20-25€.

I can donate hardware, but I can't donate money. I'd be skimming into my savings to do so.

To be honest, we got offered a free server and I never interacted with it on a "BlockJunkies" level. If votick had posted at some point "soooooo... I need money to keep this going, check out my donate button!" I would have done so. If its only a matter of a couple of quid each per month then thats cool, hell we were all talking about donating to EC for him to run a server so why the hell not BJ?

We just didn't know or think you cared!

I would had considered donating but this post on blockjunkies isn't exactly encouraging me to do so.

    <sigh>

Can we get another edit on the first post of this topic to include a bit about donating?

As I never really looked at the Blockjunkies site other than to register quickly, I didn't see the the bit that mentions donations.
With it being the lead up to Christmas I don't have much cash at the moment, but I'll put what I can towards the upkeep when I get some rent paid back at the end of the month. I'll definitely have a bit spare cash each month after Christmas is over. :)
