ive been experimenting in SP. flaming arrows wont start a portal. and blocks cannot be placed inside an active portal (including being pushed by a piston).

back to the drawing board :p

I had a feeling that was the case, so how about my suggestion of the iris essentially closing the portal off, but allowing for a drop into an ice cavern?

The next issue would be how to construct the "gate" itself. For aesthetic reasons I feel we should keep the obsidian portal as concealed as we can, but use coloured wool (or otherwise) to depict the portal from the show. It would be easy enough to make this structure large enough to accommodate the pistons and circuitry required to shove a couple blocks in place over the obsidian portal, blocking the player except for one route. Another option would be to go outside of cannon a bit, using the obsidian portal itself as the "gate" (accentuate the shape to form a circle, sorta - it is minecraft after all). An iris would then essentially have to come from the floor via a series of pistons (use sand/gravel, allowing for instant resetting with gravity).

But the other thought I just had that would be equally as cool, but somewhat different, would be to construct a circular structure to represent the "gate", then simulate the portal of the show with water flowing from inside the top of the structure, captured in a trough at the bottom (so it doesn't get on the floor causing everybody to have wet socks). Turning the "gate" on and off would consist of shutting the water flow on and off. Whilst this wouldn't act as an iris, it would directly affect the aesthetic, achieving much the same effect. Though it would make the obsidian portal within the structure look a little silly :p

why not combine the two ideas? have your obsidian portal, in front of that a piston powered door to hide the obsidian and in front of that, the water "gate". when the water flow is shut off, the piston door closes to hide the obsidian portal. then the water is "on" the piston doors open so a player can walk through the portal. the flowing water should obscure the obsidian enough that it will only look goofy in the 2-block wide area between the two portals.

The only way to deactivate a portal is with TNT. And there is only so much sand in the world.

I'll chip in some ideas when they come in.

*You can't see portals through water. Maybe the water can obscure it, and have the actual portal elsewhere behind the "wormhole".

Well an idea had was to have a circular aesthetic stargate with water running in it, then the portal one block behind, so you walk through the water to get to the portal.

If we cant turn the main portal on or off then we should at least try to turn the water flow on and off :)

thats why i suggested the piston door behind the water portal between the water and real portals. with the water shut off the piston door would cover the real portal to give it a deactivated gate look.

So after my last post I remembered something important: water doesn't work in the nether :p It just sort of vanishes in a poof of smoke. As such I've ended up just putting in a structure that looks a bit like a gate with the nether portal in the middle.

Did I mention that the spawn nether portal works? Guess that's of some significance! There are still quite rather a lot of things to do with the facility, but it's getting there. Main things left on the little checklist we all have going: flooring in the gate room (it's partially done - and Bogo, there is a slight chance I've bred a ton more sheep in your little pasture as they weren't eating fast enough...); one wall in the corridor leading back away from the facility itself to the large central room (which is done, by the way); more lighting (gate room, corridors, and have them switched from the control room - incidentally, I'm nearly out of redstone! Dump some in the chest and I'll happily finish this); a storage/tooling room fitting with cannon; getting the control room up to snuff (it's rather barren at the moment). From there I feel we can just start linking up corridors with other peoples portal rooms, using the facility as part hub, part piece of art. The large central room type thing is coming together nicely as well, though I still feel we need to have a bit of an air-lock to the outside (one of the four tunnels going out from beneath Bogo's portal will work nicely I think, if nobody has any objections), and maybe expand that underground viewing area, as I kind of like it.

Insofar as the gate-type structure is concerned, the way I have it I don't like it. With my texture pack at least it looks horrid, but I cannot think of a good way to modify it, so I'll probably just leave this to somebody else with a better eye for aesthetic.

And finally: I've temporarily blocked off the two rail tunnels leading away from beneath Bogo's portal. I'll fix these later.

In the 1.1 update they removed the ability to use silk touch on ice blocks, so at the moment you can only do it with hacks I believe.

    Oh....

Perhaps we could get a mod to put in water for that reason only?

That's strange, Fio. I'm sitting at spawn right now and other than lower than normal FPS (53 rather than 65+) it's running fine.

Try entering the "towerhouse" (mine) next to spawn - that's where the trouble began for me.. :sigh:

That is a very strange issue, Fio! Same one I have in the nether in that there isn't an FPS drop, nor does my CPU/GPU usage ramp up, but there is massive stuttering and lag. Cannot say what it is, but I get it there as well.

Now, there is something I must complain about: all my stuff is gone! Was playing earlier but had to log off to deal with some stuff, came back on and all of my inventory vanished entirely and I spawned on World rather than beside my bed in my shack in World18, where I left myself. My watch, three iron pickaxes (two were unused I believe), two iron shovels (unused), an enchanted diamond sword (over half health left), full iron armour (chest was enchanted), half-stack of torches, 30-odd bread and a Potion of Health II. I also had some XP saved up, but do not remember what level I was at. Not cool! I'm thinking this is a problem bigger than just me, as Ending_Credits also experienced this earlier, loosing quite a lot as well. Thankfully I had dumped most things out of my inventory before logging out (as I typically do), but that is still quite a blow to lose all of that stuff! Anyway EC and I (along with anybody else that has lost their stuff in this way) can get it back, since it was a server problem?

You can deactivate a portal by running water (on in this case, lava) through it, to relight it you can use a lava source.

Also, yeah, I lost a good inventory full of stone and cobble to the server bug, not nice although not critical.

I have also twice "gone back in time" in inventory - and also in location - when logging in I appeared in the bottom of a Ravine that JR and I had discovered, even if we explored it all the way and I had gone back home before logging out.

Now I learned to always put important stuff in chests before I log out.
I don't think I lost any huge valuables - except 9 diamonds and a few gold ingots - but I'll survive without them ;)

Ask a server mod (or in this thread) to move you to the [BT] group.

Then just use /goto *wordlname* (world, world17, world18)

Also I think you can bring grass into the nether if you use silk touch (and then it should spread normally).

tried both of these, cant get them to work. the lava treats the purple portal stuff like a solid block.
