Taking a break from the bigger thread that is project Goliath, I present a mini-mod for ya'll.

PC-Speakers are ugly, they take up space, and its another wire to manage... but they serve their purpose (post codes, overheat chirps, etc) So why don't motherboard manufacturers just put them onboard?

Well, on some P233-MMX boards (gateway OEM), they did exactly that.

So I thought, why not canibalize that speaker and combine the speaker connector and speaker for a mini-speaker.

Clip the leads really short from the speaker connector and wrap them around the speakers pins. Don't worry about polarity, it doesn't matter. Solder them in place.

Add a little black electrical tape for good measure.

And install! Nice and small, no wires to manage, and it does its job just fine.

Thought this might be useful to ya'll

    Comments? Questions?

Heh, my tyan board doesn't even have onboard speaker headers! Not even an onboard speaker! Go figure. And my gigabyte board has a built in one. But nice work, I actualy have a pre-made mini one exactly like what you did (came with my case, the wires from the header to the chirper are only about 1/4" long).

    Random ideas

What would be cool is if you could wire it up to an LED instead of a speaker then put it on your front panel so you have a visual POST code as well. What would be even cooler is if you managed to get an LCD to recognize POST codes as electrical impulses and display information as to what it meant. Sure, it would be underused and overpriced but this is bit-tech, we do things for the sake of doing them.

It wouldn't actualy be that hard to have an LED insted of a buzzer, least I wouldn't think so o_O Just a matter of getting a circut that once it senses input, it "closes" another circut (the one for the LED). Can't be smegged to remember what they are called, but they do exist! As for the POST stuff, that would be BIOS integrated I would think.

one of the motherboards i bought not to long ago had a speaker like that... all short and stuff. I think it was mt old Chaintech summit.

And then there was the iCute case that came with one too. Had it in its little zup shut bag ready to attach to the motherboard. Speaking of which, i think i actually have that speaker plugged into my motherboard (different motherboard and different case) right now.

looks great, you could also get the speakers from older modems, but i would use some heat shring tubing instead of the el tape, just cus el tape gets all sticky after a while.

The led post reporter you could use an ASUS mobo unsolder the led`s extend with some wire put them on a small board in a empty 3.1/2" bay with tinted plexy infront so they do`nt show when inactive and I know there are other mobo`s with other led config`s that would look good this way aswell :dremel:

/edit to hide the wires you could run them on other side of mobo tray?edit

WOOT! I am a genious :D Figured out how to hook up an LED in place of an internal buzzer! Here's proof! The program I'm using to simulate the beeps is a pop up stopper, and whenever it stops a pop up, it beep's using the buzzer, so I just kept hitting "Test Sound", as shown in the clip. Sorry for the bad lighting!

How this works: The basic pin-out of a standard speaker connector is as follows: +5v, Ground, N/A, Data. Basicly: connect the + side of the LED up to the +5v (or whatever voltage you want, can be taken from anywhere), then connect the - side of the LED up to the Data line. Simple ehh?
