Hi guys, looking to get a new phone but want something that can connect to the internet. Had a look around and im very confused (dont really do phones) and i was wondering whether you can get internet via the mobile signal or do you have to be connected via wifi? Really i want something that can connect anywhere (so i can check BIT-TECH :thumb: )

So what am i after is it 3g, I-mode, Smart phone, <enter one of the many others>

was looking at the XDA IIs smart phone but i think it needs a wifi hotspot to conect to the net?

    (sorry for complete noobiness)

    Cheers

Right, quick rundown of how the XDA series work.

The XDA 2s has the functionality of a phone, as well as WiFi and I think.. Bluetooth.

While you are within any range of cell reception (ie are able to make calls) You should be able to use GPRS (basically an always on internet connection mainly designed for phones) This should give you up to aprox. 110kbps. If you connect to the internet like this it will be quite slow and you will pay for any data you transfer.

3G, works much like GPRS except it is much faster, more along the lines of 300kbps (I think?!) so you'll be able to transfer data much faster, and again be charged for your calls, however this is dependant on 3g/imode reception, which should be indicated on the screen (BTW I think only the XDA exec has 3g functionality)

Now, WiFi, This is only available roughly 100m within a Wireless Access Point (WAP - not to be confused with the wap available on phones back in the day (which stands for wirelessly accessable page iirc)) These can be found at many places; pubs, hotels, mcdonalds, starbucks, neros, etc etc... now these places will charge you something like £6 per hour for the privelidge of being able to browse at speeds of up to 11Mbps. There are free access points out there, usually run by people in neighbourhoods or that haven't secured them etc, they are more ideal.

I hope that helps. But in short any new phone even a normal phone like a SEk750i will access the internet, but not as fast as an XDA etc...
