Well it is mainly used for texting and music, the camera on my n95 tends to only be used when drunk...

The internet on the phone isn't something i have used on my n95 as it is rubbish... However i've used the iPhone and can see me using the internet more on that.

Now from what i've read it seems 50/50 whether or not a new iPhone is coming out. Its quite clear that the new firmware is. Does anyone have any proof of a new iPhone handset as i can't find any...

Er... I don't know if anyone's recommended the iPhone in this thread as opposed to OP in person, but I have to say though it's common and expensive at the same time, as an all-round thing to carry in your pocket I don't think there's much that comes close. The capacitive screen means MultiTouch is actually a useful speed saver rather than a gimmick, it's relatively tough and the UK internet deal is good. If you like you can run all sorts of stuff on it (mine, unlocked, can be used as a pseudo-modem for my laptop).

Plus although a new one is rumoured, the O2 deal means they'll tear up your contract if you like, and give you a new phone and new contract. So you could buy one now and wait up.

Is that so PureSilver? If that is something O2 are willing to do then it does ease my mind about getting an iPhone now to find out that it gets replaced in a couple of months!

Yeah, just ask them to make sure. Remember, though, you'll be throwing away the money you pay in your contract because they don't let you keep the old iPhone. Since mine's battered to s*** and is pretty much useless except as an 8GB iPod with wireless connectivity, without a network/internet (at least, it will be useless once I have a new iPhone), I don't mind the loss. Also, you won't have it for very long, so that loss is reduced.

But yeah - ask. It certainly was the case on my contract, and it should be on yours. It's how Apple make their sales certain.

not sure if anyone has usggested it but what about the HTC Magic, they are also teh company that makes the G1, from reviews has an awesome screen, smaller than the G1, pretty to look at android, no 3.5mm socket thorugh if you want your phone for music...

Its what i'll be getting when I give up Touch Dual soon... Or a Palm Pre (although no announced release date for that)

edit: also you can get it on a 18 month contract for 35 quid a month...

Another vote for iPhone over here. Had my 3G since launch day (yes I waited in line at 6am and will do again for the new one) And I can honestly say that I will never go back to any other type of phone. Cap touch has got to be one of the many great things about it that I can never go back to anything else. Multitouch has just made everything so much easier it just seems so much more natural especially the pinch zoom gesture, it just works.

I won't disaggree that the iPhone in it's current incarnation has some (fairly bloody big) limitations, such as low res camera (takes some pretty decent photos tho in good light) gimp-masked bluetooth, and lack of tethering and cut and paste... But having said that these issues should be dealt with in the next revision, we've already seen tethering and cut and paste, been a few things knocking around regarding letting bluetooth out of it's box especially with rumours of A2DP, and Apple ordering 3 and 5MP camera sensors... so we can at the moment but hope for new shiney good.

Personally until the iPhone goes the way of the Newton.. It'll always be my main phone.

I have used an iPod touch and really didn't get on with it, bizarrely having the same problems you are blaming resistive touch screens for! On both of the ones I have tried, a first gen and a second gen, they have had problems registering my fingers which my Diamond just doesn't have.

Someone is working on the pinching motion for resistive touch screens, it is fairly easy to do because they can register the size of the "blob" you make, with two fingers spreading apart, you get a bigger "blob"

I think a trip to the Apple shop and the O2 shop is in order, see if i can get any more information on the possible new iPhone in addition to the contract options as mentioned. Cheers for the help so far everyone.

i think the problem is that resistive touch need finger-tip clicking, meaning you usually click by applying pressure. whereas capacitive touch screens is sensing a blob of finger, you don't need to press hard at all.

i am used to my iPhone, just lightly touch with inside of my right hand thumb. when i was given my friend's Diamond a year ago and recently my friend's TouchHD, my clicks never register.

iPhone is good, but as PureSilver said, check whether you can upgrade to the newer if one were to come out. and once you get 3G, jailbreak it, being in Apple's prison is worse than not having the phone.

Hummm.... Have you considered the Nokia 5800? My flatmate has it and it rather fond of it. I've got the HTC touch HD and I like it but it took some work to get it set up the way I want.

If you can wait a couple of months, I hear the next gen of phones will be released with the snapdragon processor (about twice 1GHz compared to the 500MHz of todays top phones).

I've tried the apple and yes, it is more sensitive but I don't think it's that significant. Unless you're used to it, you really won't notice the difference. And the iphone forces you to use your fingers (so you can't use it with gloves for example...)

Hi, I can't agree that all non-capacitive screens are junk, it's just not true. The HTC Touch HD screen is superb, even through a screen protector and finger scrolling works really well with very little pressure. I've tried iphones and don't find the screens any more sensitive. For me itt comes down to OS - Windows mobile is sometimes buggy, depending on the specific build, but Apple are far too restrictive and controlling. If I don't like my OS I can reflash it with a cooked ROM. That said HTC have done a good job with the HD, it's very well set up straight out of the box.

Have to warn you that there have been some problems with the HTC HD music player. It doesn't seem to affect everyone but some (including mine) sometimes 'skip'. Can get a bit annoying. I've flashed a new ROM and that seems to have fixed the problem although as far as I know, no one knows why this happens or how to fix it...

Apologies if this is slightly off topic, but Dark Banana, presumably you've already seen the thread on the problem at XDA Developers?
