Alrighty, my Mobo is pronounced legaly dead ;) I wanna KT266A, stable overclocking, if RAID can be used without RAID'ing the drives I wouldn't mind RAID, I don't want onboard sound or modem, and I really don't care about the price. Don't give me your marked out opinions. I want the honest truth based on benchmarks and stats of the boards.

Well then, that would seem to come down to the EpoX 8KHA+ or the Abit KR7A-RAID then. My choice would be the Abit.

What about the MSI Pro2-RU? Also I heard BAD things about the Epox. Also I heard the Abits RAID is horrible!

The abit's RAID controller is interesting...ATA133 capable, although for some reason it has problems with my dad's Barracuda IVs, and only runs them at ATA66. I believe this will be fixed with a BIOS update.

I thought the MSI had things like sound on board?

    Hmmm

The Abit has 6 PCI, while the MSI trades one PCI for the USELESS CNR slot. You've got on-board sound on the MSI also. Both are compatible with large HSFs, such as the Alpha PAL8045. The Abit has 4 DIMM slots, compared to the 3 of the MSI. The MSI has USB 2, which the Abit does not. The MSI only has 6 mounting holes, allowing the board to flex/break when installing IDE/Memory. The Abit has 9.

Both Anandtech and Tom's Hardware didn't think a great deal of the MSI, both placing the EpoX higher in their ratings.

I don't mind the 1 loss of a pci slot, but 4 holes? Hmmm, I think I'm going with that Abit.

Are you sure that board is Slot 1? Most dual slot boards (if not all) were slot 2. Check.

Yeah, get the Soyo K7V Dragon+. It's a fantastic, fantastic board. It simply has everything from excellent overclocking to good sound and raid. This has got to be the board to get and is worth every penny. www.chillblast.co.uk stock it at around £150:cool: :D

If I was making the choice now, it would be a tough one between the Epox and the ABit KR7A.... I like the features and speed of the Epox, but there is the downside of the motherboard sucking out of the 5V rail :(

Although I have a large psu, I still don't think it would handle the the board all that well

However going on to the ABit, first impressions are, very well thought out layout, nothing is stupidly situated. The features look awesome, and I have an ABit at the moment, which is stable, and a good overclocker (my present CPU is crap, hence the low overclock) Ive had a duron 800 at 137FSB (7.5 x 137 1.03GHz) running the RAM with the most agressive settings... mmmmmmmm very nice :D also a TBird 1000 (200FSB) at 1240 (124 x 10)

Hope this aids your choice :)

Blah, asus is the devil. They OC their boards.

I dunno about the Abit, I heard the IDE Controller is RANCID. Is this true?

    Onboard Components

Just a note: If you are into overclocking - and plan on hitting high FSB speeds (150+), onboard components (sound, video, lan etc) are a risk because they may 'crap out' at high FSB speeds - making the whole motherboard useless.

Good luck finding what you need - I also recommend Abit motherboards m8s have had good overclocks with them...

Popeye: Slockets are generally annoying - If you want to stick great big fans on them (especially on twin CPU mobos) it can be quite a mission, they seem to generate more heat as well), I've only ever installed one of them on a colleagues (not a m8 so what else could I call him) Pc, and i didn't enjoy it one itty bitty bit. Good luck anyways.

    you know it makes sence

the ABIT deffinatly, that the next mobo i'm getting got an KG7 RAID at the mo and its v good.

But the KR7 adds ATA 133.

Got 9/10 from via so it must be good.
