http://www.worldamazingrecords.com/2009/06/volkswagen-golf-world-fastest-car-than.html Knowing we have a few petrolheads here, thought you might like this - it's not actually faster in top speed, but that sort or acceleration in a golf is astounding...
A few years back, Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, CO ( our local NHRA dragstrip) had a contest between the 4WD GMC Syclone - 4.3L V6 Turbo Intercooled and a Ferrari. The Syclone won every 1/4 mile drag against all the Ferraris. Drag racing is about gearing for power in the bands needed for 1/4 mile - NOT top end. Was fun to watch a pick em up truck blow away some of Italy's finest. john
I thought that was a bit misleading, it's not like any old Mk.I Golf would do the work, I think the 700bhp might have helped just a bit... I can kind of dig cars that are built with focus (like Elises, or Caterhams), but I reckon focusing solely on acceleration is a game fit only for rollercoasters and dragsters; I bet this Veyron beater off-boost could be beaten to 60mph by, say, a Mk.I Golf that has the standard 49bhp.
Marilyn and I raced a Gallardo with our Hyundai Elantra. We won for about 12'(4 meters) until the Lambos let out the clutch and just drove away. john
Man in video: "0-60 in 2.6 seconds" Article : "0-60 in 2.36 seconds" As its his car I assume he is infact right... making it slower than a veyron, no?
He coulda just saved money bought an R32 + twin chargers = 700bhp, but good project, I know people who've had 350bhp Ibizas and they were rapid, also saw a Mk2 Golf Synchroed on the Nurburgring, that outran my mates Lotus Exiege S on the straights and went just as quick as it round the corners (I was sat in the Exiege at the time). Most impressive though but bit of a one trick pony.
i saw this randomly on youtube homepage yday, id say itd give the veyron a good run on a track too goes to show you weight is more important than power i had a c. 140bhp saxo VTS, little weapon of a car, bit of a sleeper too, no one expected it from a saxo
My good sir, I for one apologise if the thread title was misleading. I posted this at work in a busy patch, so didn't really go over the details too much. I've amended the title to make it clearer
it's not misleading. It's obvious (like, really obvious) that not all the mk1 beat the veyron and that this thread is about the exception that did
Yeah, I didn't mean change the thread title... Although having said that, if it is possible to catch a Veyron off-boost, I maintain it is at least semi-plausible that a stock Golf could (probably very briefly) outrun it. If you saw the Top Gear drag between the massively-turbo'd Mitsubishi Evo FQ400 and some Renault people-carrier, it's plain that if caught off-boost such cars are agonizingly slow to get back on the power because of their epic turbo-lag. Admittedly, the Veyron would have to be driven by a complete fool, but if it's possible for a quad-turbo car to be in such a state I think it's possible that the Golf could make a quick run for it...
With twin turbo's (per V8) you'll get far less lag, and because it has plenty of torque and power by itself I reckon it'd be pretty quick off-boost. Certainly better than a single huge turbo on 4-pot anyway.
