I've got a Nexus fan controller and currently even at the lowest setting the fans are still quite loud, and pushing more than an adequate ammount of air.

It uses a 12v input, so I'm thinking of just doing the 7v trick on it so I get 7v out max and probably around 4v minimum, which would probably stop the fan (which is what I want).

Will this work? Or am I likely to fry the whole thing?

    Cheers :)

I dunno, but if it does blow up, take a photo!

If you start out with 7V, it likely will drop down lower than 4V on the other end of the pot, meaning between 4V and 7V you'll lose a lot of speed control sensitivity.

If you want to stop the fan can you not just put a switch inline to kill it?

Looking at the PCB it uses both 12v and 5v lines, so 7v trick isn't really possible.

Instead I'm going to just add 3 diodes to the fan cables to lower the voltage by 2.5v
