has anyone ever tried to cut the end off of - or out of - a PCIe x8 slot to allow a PCIe x16 card?
if so can you provide any tips or pointers on how to do so without screwing up the mobo?
    thanks!!!

You can easily remove piece of plastic with scalpel. No big deal.

i was thinking of just taking a hack saw blade and pulling away from the back of the slot
the back referring to the small segment before the rest of the slot
    any thoughts on this?

Scalpel or Xacto knife. Hacksaw would pull traces and destroy them.

I think what there telling you to do it xacto
The piece of plastic off first then cut rather than cut whilst still on the board

I did it a few years back on a Gigabyte board, with a very sharp scalpel and a bit of patience. Worked and everything.

My only conclusion after the event was that a dremel would have made it easier.
