    hey all.
well in my quest to get an ever quiter yet cooler computer, i decided to mod the cooler on my grapics card.
the card in question is a gainward ti4800se, great card, does what i want it do and im not a fan of HAVING to play the latest game at the absolute max resolution, if its playable, then thats enough!
anyway, i had a zalman cnps3100cu+ all copper flower cooler lyeing around that was begging to be mounted onto the gainward.
i had the stock heatsink lying around and used that to get a 'feel' for where the holes were, i didnt want to take the card out until i had to install the cooler onto it.
made the bracket out of some wood, and a suitable 'spring' out of an old cpu mounting spring for a socket 7 cooler, used some 3mm bolts and nuts and a few spacers and put it onto it using some random white goop i had lying around, i only really wanted to know if it'd work before using the AS5, put insulation tape around the holes on the card and stuck it on!
managed to get a thermal probe off my aerogate inbetween the fins too, and right now they're sitting at around 40c, thats with a tiny 50mm fan on it running silent at 7v.
just gota make a bracket to support the card now from the base of the case as not comfortable with almost half a kilo (or how much ever it is)hanging off my graphics card!
fair enough i lost the use of 3 pci slots, but hey! means i can run it passively at times when i want to, gna experiment with that later on today probly!

Using old cpu HSF's on graphics cards are a great way to make use of old junk. I have an old OEM socketA HSF on my 9800Pro. Does such a good job I havent bothered to WC it!

A CPU cooler onto a graphic card...I have such a creation. I mounted a heatsink from an old Athlon running at 1 GHz onto a (old like yours) GF MX 440 (though i don't play games with it much) It really made it a cool card...well it was not a block of ice ;) . Give us some images! Ask bits to give you some photos of my card as I don't have them uploaded to a server reachable for you

The OEM HSF I used was the one that came with my 2500+ Barton. Its an all copper one with bonded fins instead of the shaved up crap they usually give. I was pretty surprised that this was an OEM. I replaced the fan with a better 60mm one and run it at 7V. It does such a good job on my 9800Pro that the HSF is cool, even the back of the GPU isn't that warm. And thats with the GPU clocked to 490MHz and overvolted to 1.90V IIRC. Pics available upon request.

Well in order to have more PCI slots i tried to keep the card without a fan (it tooks 2 PCI slots without the fan). Apparently its not that hot...it can run safely only with the heatsink. Pics? Maybe some other time, the card is not in my inventory for a wile ;)

i've actually got the fan sitting on top of the fins, not parallel to the pci slots, but perpendicular to them, the same position that the cpu fan is in, so it doesnt take any extra space at all on mine. the heatsink design you have is probable different tho.and you probly mounted it a diff way too.

actualy I also thought of that way of mounting. The heatsink is an old one - an early one for socket A. The fan is supposed to sit ontop of it but I mounted it at the side of the heatsink. In that position a bigger fan can also cool the memories :)
