i'm guessing that this has been asked many times before, so apologies if i'm commiting the usual noobie sin. i have a coolermaster wavemaster case for my main pc, i also have a dirty great big old case (jeantech i think, semi-opaque blue with a door and a white stripe down the front of it) i fancy doing something with one of them, aside from watercooling i wanted to incorporate an amplifier in there with binding posts to connect the speakers, but i wasnt sure i i needed to seperate the 2 electrically or if they could like on the same mounts. any thoughts, or ideas would be appreciated. many thanks
well as every of these posts is responded...we cud do with some pics for help...and maybe ideas could come in better?
yeah, gonna rip the blue case out of its corner tonight and get some pics of it inside and out and post them. need to check how it's standing the test of time, last time i had it out it delt rather creaky, so the first mod might be drilling rivets out and rebuilding the case so its strong enough!
Any amplifier would need to be shieled from the case, especially the transformer. Amplifiers are succeptable to inteference, something PC's have in abundance!! Also remember that it will likely need another mains feed as the PSU won't be powerful enough for it. You'll need to be careful of grounding too, especially with the case and the binding posts. If you don't you'll end up with som much hum that it will be unlistenable.
was thinking more of a home amp, rather than a car amp (have tried route before) one idea was to use a mains cable with a "Y" adapters in it (i have a few floating around at work) so i could still use 1 cable for both devices. with grounding, i'm guessing that mounting the amplifier on plastic stands with no metal touching metal would solve that problems, and a similar thing for the binding posts??
right, pulled the case out, and didnt realise it still had the guys of an old machine in there (seti rig i think, abit KT7-Raid, 4mb agp card, duron 700!!) anyway, some pics for your digestion (oh, and apologies for the sate of it) rough measurements are 40cm deep 19.5cm wide 63cm hight its made of quite soft thin steel, which hasnt been helped my me bodging on some wheels which i think have moved the motherboard tray and stopped things lining up as they should (being carted around some alot of its like didnt help either i dont think) this is the amp i was thinking of sticking in there, its a sony DAV-S500 home cinema in a box, so 6 channels, optical and phono inputs. was surprised to find 5 boards in it though! not bothered about the drive in it, or the ablility to change input (might be nice if it's easy) but it would be nice to have decent quality amplification on board instead of having to rely on dodgy speakers or other amps
Nice big case! It certainly has potential. For grounding you would need to make sure that the amp case didn't touch the PC case. Did you intend to have both inputs and outputs on the back or just outputs and use an internal soundcard output (to the amp)? Not really sure how you are going to get the bits out of that AIO jobby. You should be able to seperate the boards into their respective parts (probably power, amplification, dsp, drive control and input/output control). To be honest your best bet would be to try and find a service manual for it (this is what engineers use for fixing them) and see if that helps. Personally I would go the DIY route and build an amp but that would likely cost you at least $100 depending on what you could rob from elsewhere.
I thought you were puttinng a GUITAR amp in the case! Thank God I was wrong! Could you imagine the horror of a big speaker+ reverb box+ harddrive? That inner compartment should help a little with your sheilding issues, but you will need a new place for your psp...
i was thinking at one point of building a small sub into some spare space in the case, but i didnt fancy dealing with the vibrations, or the shielding!
