No, it was fine.. I wish I'd made enough for a pure blue one now. Red and blue mixed doesn't really give that kind of Prince/Purple Rain colour I was looking for.

I'll wait until mashed potatoes comes up next and see if I can better it.

I suspect, kna, you're using a vegetable oil to get that poor result. Lard everytime. Tell Vic to forego her well-meant intentions and get some pig fat in.

I think she's using Olive Oil.. I dunno, I just came in at the 'oo, food colouring' stage. :D

    Vic, use LARD.

olive oil is god for you though, and doesn't usually flavour what your cooking... unless you buy one that does of course.

the swirl one looks ok, but the others don't look so hot.
In one of my design classes we looked at food ads and were told to keep green/blue away from the food because our minds register those colors with mold and fungus. which will affect the taste even if we 'know' its not moldy. I found it neat anyway. and I've tried food coloring with potatoes and it always turns out mostly grey. maybe has to do with all of the potato starch?

I havent had a pancake since I was living at home with mother,

And back then it had to be smothered with jam, rolled up, covered in syrup and sugar, then it would be deemed as consumable

I must get a good frying pan at some stage

Olive oil is great for lots of cooking but not really frying. Standard high-grade vegetable oil on a low-ish temperature gives the best pancakes ever! For the last like 10 years we've been having scotch pancakes instead because they're much nicer. I make mine as big as the pan and half an inch thick :D
