Those who accuse some of us of being CoD haters need to understand that most of us used to be CoD LOVERS. We loved the series so much back when it actually made sense and actually did require skills that now that it has turned into a clusterf*ck of SPAM, we are pissed because we lost what used to be made for US ; a god damn PC Game for real gamers
+1 Agreed. In fact I dipped into CoD4 earlier today and loved it, I even love the cinematic feel of both the modern warfare campaigns as well. Go and play CoD4 and then Black Ops. Although Black Ops has more customisation, more killstreaks, more weapons, better models etc. as 3lusive listed, CoD4 feels like a much better game to me: just the game mechanics feel so much more right and the amount of choice we were allowed and given to us on the PC was superior in my opinion. We don't hate the franchise, we hate the way the franchise has gone recently as we loved the earlier games.
The "story" in MW2 was so insultingly bad I cannot take it seriously. It's just terrible. This is coming from a guy who loved all of the previous CoD games, including CoD4. CoD games used to have a message. They used to tell real stories about real situations and presented them in a way that was respectful and epic. Now it's just become a caricature of itself. Black Ops was much more believable, and tolerable, than MW2. The multiplayer has become a total cluster**** spawn/die/helicopterupyourass mess. It's just not fun for me. The latest interview with the Battlefield guy (can't remember his name) put the hammer right on the nail. I'll paraphrase but "we can give you the most badass weapon in the game, but how is that fun for the person being shot?" CoD rewards a 3 kill streak with a never ending chain of powers that all lead into more powers that grant you free "click-kill-click-kill" abilities that just turn the game into an absolutely mess. You're constantly getting killed by **** that comes out of no where, by a player who's no where near you, that you can't avoid and can rarely see coming, and even if you do, you're still screwed. CoD4 had choppers and air strikes but those were at least avoidable and easier to take down. MW2 and Blops have just totally taken it too far IMO. BF3 all the way.
But BC2 sales between platforms is around the same. All platforms have around 2 million sales. Plus I've heard it many times, people who play COD whatever and BC2, they prefer BC2 10 times more than COD
Steam stats are useless for comparing player numbers on the PC anyway, since that figure includes every single copy of the last two COD games (which use Steamworks DRM), but not copies of BC2 purchased outside of Steam. If you take a look here you'll see the real numbers, which are roughly comparable.
Doom Cheesecake! Kidding (kinda) I have to admit that CoD4 did bring FPS gaming into it's current generation but then it did get very stagnant very quickly. And anything not Infinity Ward was truly atrocious so I don't expect the hollow shell that is the new IW to be any good tbh.
I'm in the same boat. I loved CoD 1,2,4 and after that it lost its appeal to me and I switched back to BC2. To add balance I also loved BF1942 and secret weapons, but I haven't played another BF untill BC2. Out of the next iterations of the series BF appeals the most.
It surprises how many people are saying just that, people at my work place keep banging on about it too they just don't seem to realise that Infinity Ward isn't Infinity Ward any longer. Without West and Zampella and the half the studio that left with them its just the continuation of the name, but you might as well consider it a completely new studio. Its a rehash of the story of how Infinity Ward was formed tbh, when they left 2015 (Original MoH:AA devs) to form Infinity Ward because of EA being evil publishers to them at the time. Yes, I was a PC CoD player, yes I really enjoyed CoD 1,2,4, and I paid for and played MW2 and CODBLOPS but I don't expect I'll be playing MW3. I'm simply sick of the lack of innovation and the over priced nature of the games, plus quality has taken such a nose dive since CoD4. That said I did enjoy the co-op mode in MW2, but that was about it every other aspect was just wrong. Happily I've got a pre-order already for BF3, don't fail me DICE.
I do address that in the rest of my post, as a matter of fact that was sort of my point too, hence why i started off by saying i have no faith in MW3.
Yes sorry, I wasn't meaning to take your quote out of context, it was specificity that point that I have noticed a lot of people in my "real life" mentioning so I wanted to respond to it, rather than to specificity the point you were making, at work in particular I feel a little about it at times. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. Its Sunday morning.
COD 4 was the first truly on-line cross platform FPS that most console gamers played. Remember the buzz the first time you got really hooked on a on-line multi player game on your PC? It was epic and that is what COD is for this generation of console gamers. It has become a console MMO for people who have no idea what a MMO is. Yes there was Halo before it but that was MS only. With COD4 people who heard it was good from friends could go and play it regardless of their system. It is very hard to try and drum up excitement from my friends about BF3 as they are console gamers and can only compare it to BC2 which to them is a COD copy. They are completely unaware of the earlier BF games. Personally i feel saddened by the demise of a great franchise. COD 1,2 & 4 where all brilliant.
I promised myself I would not buy Black Ops and I still did - regretted it. I am definitely not going to buy any more. It's just the same old stuff churned out year on year and Activision will continue to do it. It makes me sad that publishers no longer require their developers to be innovative as people buy it anyway (in the past I am also guilty). At least with the new Frostbyte engine, DICE, it seems, are trying to build something that plays to the strengths of the PC while coping with the weaknesses (in terms of memory and internal data transfer) of the consoles to produce something that still looks good there too. I now almost exclusively play Arma2 - it demonstrates all the attributes of what PC gaming is about (size, complexity, massive community input, genuine support from the developers). Everything else just seems to be fluff aimed at quickly cashing in on an increasingly gullable public.
I've played all the COD games that have ever been released on the PC. I've played Battlefield Bad Company 2 as well. And I've thoroughly enjoyed them all. Nobody made me buy them or play them, but I'm very, very glad I did. So for me, at least, it's been a win-win situation.
I think the issue with the new COD games is a matter of scale. There just isn't any more of those insane 30+ player battles. On the other hand, I do genuinely miss the 64 player BF2 matches.
You mean the tube-fests on Crossfire? with fights in the little alcoves everywhere? DAMN YEAH, they were hell of a lot of fun! M60 and wandering around dooming everyone into the floor... I think the fun part was the nigh attrition and how everything was balanced so that if a team got the upper hand it could all change so fast! MW2 and Blops just didn't have that...
People can complain all they want about Blops, but who here hasn't played Zombies with 3 mates and had a bloody good evening?... But yes, I think I'll stick with my BF3 pre-order!
Are we not talking about Kennedy, Nixon, Castro and MacNamara? That's how I usually fight zombies in Black Ops.
