I'm a racing Sim KNUT A while back I got my hands on a Logitech Momo Force feedback wheel. Must be the best racing wheel ever made. Leather Goodness But in true modders style I've been looking at ways to improve on it After a few (LOTS) of hours playing Need for Speed Underground I had one complaint. Handbrake turns. Its an important part of taking those 90deg corners quickly and while spinning the wheel its not always easy to get a finger on the right button. So taking some inspiration from the way the handbrake is set up in real rally cars I decided to MOD a hand break lever onto my MOMO This whole mode went from Idea to working Mod in about 3 hours. Its nice when the Modding Gods sometimes smile on you and all the bits just seem to fall into place. Five Min's of scratching around my workshop revealed an old torch Getting the CUT
After some thinking (and some beer drinking) It started taking shape This is with the micro switch and the mounting barackets mounted (The brakets are old Subwoofer mounts) I needed a way to depress the switch so this was made from some plexi As I said this was a very quick mode so between the work and the beer drinking I forgot to take a few of the pics I should have I wired the switch to one of the buttons on the wheel.
First test fitting Its not as pink as it looks here (For some reason the torch just shows up like this in Pictures) Its only a shade or 2 lighter than the actual wheel.
After I routed all the wires inside the base it was time for some testing (At this point I also added a spring to the lever to make it pull back to its normal position. And the Result? WOW It works like a charm. I hope Logitech implements something like this in future products. It really adds to the realism of the game I mean the wheel looks real, You've got real F1 style gear paddles it feels silly to press a button to apply the hand break. So there is is 3 hours of design and work at a cost of 0 (the torch probably cost me like $0.50 a few years ago)
Yes , that is well done! Logitech rules at this spot, I have a Logitech GP Force Feedback, it´s the first one made in metal and has rubbergrip. That was the best Steering Wheel , cause Logitech began to make those in plastic, they suck. Now it looks like Logitech is on the right way again.
very good idea, but how durable is it, how hard can you pull on it before you think its gonna break, keep up the good work
nice idea! I really missed that back in the NFS days (i rarely play games any more).. just one litte thing.. is't it on the wrong side?
Thanks Folks As for durability its very sturdy (The "Mechanism is basically the thread that used to connect the torch head to the body so I reckon it will last a long time) The only thing I think might not last for ever is the switch as it is at a slight angle (the base is round) but it's just a case of undoing 2 screws and fitting a new one. So I don't see any problems. Its only on the wrong side If you live in the wrong place Us in South Africa drive on the Left hand side of the road (like the people from England) The Americans and Europeans drive on the Wrong side of the road So I use my left hand to control my hand brake in my real car so I did it the same here. Someone on the Local forums in SA gave me a good idea "Cover the Handle with black leather" Hmmmm I reckon that will look really snazzy. Sheik
That's a nice creative mod with a torchlight for the handbrake lever I wish i had that momo steering wheel, but no worries I play battlegear3 arcade
Nice mod - just think how sexeh a Mini-Maglite would look all that anodised ally. I think your next mod should be modding your foot with some sort of covering - like a SOCK!!!!
LOL. Dude its the middle of summer here and the temp is around 30 degrees Celsius. What you should be worried about is whether my foot is the ONLY uncovered part!! Sheik
hey ther shiek. yea, that was a great idea. i was thinking more of somthing remote, like clipped to the side of your seat where a real hand break is. but that works just as well. and that little comment about us americans driving on the wrong side of the road? excuse us. but we INVENTED the automobile. so you are the ones doing the wrong here buddy =). we invented TELEVISION. we invented almost everything. we kick ass. so you are the one driving with your handbreak on the wrong side =) just had to clairify that sucker
I wouldn't quite like to flame this thread or anything, but r3q, it mite be a better idea to check the facts, which you claim that "we invented the automobile.....invented almost everything" in America is not entirely true. However, i am going to point out that it seems that America makes things better than everything else (or so it seems). This may seem like America invented it first....alas, it is not that simple. From what i recall, the Germans were the first one's to create a motorcar? or was it a motorbike i'm thinking of?
am i the only one thinking about that HUGE running gag about if you see a product with the made in america sticker on it you make fun of it, and just laugh at how shoddy it is... ?
