mainly the fact on anything other than 'daylight' setting it resulted in my monitor looking like it's been the victim of several years of nicotene staining or an accident with a bottle of fake tan... the whites were an orangey brown colour and it seemed to kill any contrast making text very hard to read...

That is a bug, described in the FAQ :
@RedFlames: Default settings were indeed like if someone sprayed a layer of orange juice on my monitor :hehe:, i changed the night settings to 4800K which is somewhere inbetween crazy orange and cold blue.

I had an ache in my eyelids today, so after reading this, I've installed flux to see what happens.

I think, I can already feel an improvement, but that might just be in my head.

I've got night at 3600k and daylight at 6500k, probably turn the daylight one down when I see what it's like tomorrow.

Looked very orange to me when I started it, but now I'm adjusting to it and it's not as bad. Yes it's still slightly orangey, but not that bad for just browsing. Not tried any games yet, but it's probably best to just turn it off for that I suppose.

For me it was was like that on anything other than 6500k [the 'daylight' setting and what it looks like normally] even one step down turned everything that nicotine stain colour...

I just set it to 1200K. It makes 3000K look natural and white. I could see it being useful if you've got a lot of text based work particularly as the monitor I've got (HP ZR24) is rather bright even at minimum.

    AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! :D

ANYWAY, Mine's turned orangey/nicotiney as well. Not sure if it has reduced eye strain. Just came back from a meeting and as soon as I sat in front of my monitor my eyes started hurting again.

There is an easy way to test, put your eyes 12" from the screen and turn off Flux, if this action causes discomfort then Flux reduces eye strain.

I use flux, but with a fairly subtle warmth level. Works well that way.

For people who require colour accuracy from their monitors it probably does more harm than good.

Obviously. It alters the colour temperature.

There is a temporary disable icon in the systray for that reason.

To reduce eye strain and headaches:
-> Get a monitor that does not use a PWM to control the backlight
-> Get a monitor that does not have a glossy coating, or casing (full matte)
-> Set the monitor brightness to match the environment.
-> Blink your eyes. Some people don't blink their eyes, ever when they use a computer. Take frequent break, or look at your keyboard when typing a few times or something
-> Dehydration and allergies can cause dry eyes. Be sure you are well hydrated. Maybe the air in your environment is too dry with a mixture of not being well hydrated can also contribute to this.
-> Adjust monitor settings to reduce saturation. Also the try putting the colors on the warm or cold side... see which one helps better.
-> Get your eyes check, see if you may need glasses. Maybe you are having a hard time reading. When you are used to something (ie: hard time reading the screen), you get used to it that you don't feel it.. and feels normal, like if you have no problem. Beside, it's always good to check your eyes once and and while.

i've been using flux for a couple of years i think, it's great. i only notice the change in colour on the occasion i open my laptop and it comes out of sleep then suddenly realises it's much later than when i closed it and quickly changes it.

I just keep my 27's on 100% brightness and let them burn my eyeballs out of their sockets as much as they want :worried: That probably has a lot to do with my regular headaches and worsening eyesight problems, but I absolutely could not run a program like Flux which would alter the colour temperature of my monitors. That would drive me crazy.

A friend swears by flux but I'm not a big fan, I mean it can help reduce strain if you have all the lights off and just the monitor on at night, but just don't do that? :p
