    :jawdrop: This is un-freaking-believable!

Question: Although this is incredible, would you get the implant? I'm kind of concerned about the wireless one they're talking about. I mean think of it, someone could quite literally hack your brain! Would give a whole new meaning to "war driving" though, wouldn't it?

Amazing, very freaky at the same time, we seem to be getting closer and closer to this type of technology every month.

I doubt people would be able to 'hack' your brain, maybe put you through lots of pain or hijack your devices, but not get into your head.

You would get a lot of occourances like in wallace and gromet - the wrong trousers :D

It would be a very useful technology to have, it means that when ur driving u could start anything without buttoms and come home and have ur computer turn on when u come home :D

Wow, that's so frikkin' cool! I can't believe they've actually managed to do this... the strange part is that the labs weren't overrun and destroyed by stupid-ass animal rights protesters :grr:

/me starts work on a Winamp remote...

We are talking about metal wires in your brain though, is it really worth it for the non disabled until we start seeing deus ex style capabilaties?

What I don't get is how they knew what the monkeys were thinking. They might find that when you think "hmm I feel like pizza" the arm moves left, and "hmm my balls really itch" moves the arm to the right. I think the best possibility for this kind of technology would be reading people's minds and getting information out of terrorists etc. Obviously they have to think of a way to do it without drilling 360 holes into your skull first.

Ahh Ghost in the Shell. :D Quality sci-fi.

Kinda feel sorry for the poor monkeys though :/

I know a girl and she has one arm. I know she would be the first to try that new stuff out. (if she could). And yes I would also try the new technology if I was missing limbs

very cool. next thing they'll do is make someone have all robotic limbs and soon they'll start building terminators made out of liquid metal and able to change into any shape... :p
then only the governator will save be able to save us :D

thats not at all surprising - I can conciously cause myself to get feeling above my right eyebrow at will. It feels like a tingle - I can now do it to my entire right side of my head if I wish. I can also turn headaches on and off at will (some mild ones - not all).

Its about time they did this. People are surprised, but we've had the technology for years - for christs sake is just a bunch of wires stuck into a monkeys brain!

i think this kind of technology is quite exciting. this may be kind of a stupid question, but how are the arms powered? do the monkeys walk around with a car battery strapped to their backs ( :eeek:  :p ) or is it somehow powered by nothing other than their bodies?

the monkey's brain sends a signal to a computer which interperates it and converts it into a signal the robotic arm can understand, it then sends the instructions the monkey gave to the robotic arm. The robotic arm probably has a miniature computer of its own, even if its only small (to controll movement), it will get the instructions from the computer and then move. Basically, I'm saying its not that the monkey is DIRECTLY connected to the robotic arm, they are telling it what to do, and it obeys.

To answer your question simply, the robotic arm has its own power source. Same with the computer(s)

The article says nothing about how the monkeys were chosen , but i suspect they had to pass a Quake 3 test :D

On the serious side, i think we are very far away from something useful to be done if not Frankenstein jokes.
We know so little about the brain workings......
