Once again, the box of nightmares is causing problems. To replace the terrible Generic DDR I used to have, I bought some Crucial. The system is now insanely unstable (cant even get to windows) and its not usable. Whenever I boot to windows I get endless BSODs at 0028:00000032 (or 36, cant remember). The problems arent only related to windows, when I run the freeBSD installer that spontaneously reboots too. The system was working until I installed drivers for my SbLive! 5.1, network card and fps surround sound. I tried removing the Sound blaster drivers from autoexec.bat (DOS runs fine as far as I can tell) but win still wont work. I've heard that address 0028:xxxxxxxx normally means memory problems, but with Crucial RAM on the lowest possible settings? I'm not even overclocking!
I'm really confused and irritated. The pc has given me nothing but trouble from day1. Thanks for reading this far, thanks even more if you can help!

I just found a few things to try, I'll post my results tommorow :D

Also, is there a way to use my USB keyboard during windows bootup (e.g to cancel scandisk) and in DOS?
I cant seem to find any.

hmm, my usb keyboard has 2 connectors on the end, a usb one and a ps/2 one, if you plug both in you can use it in dos and the bootup etc :)

Enable USB Keyboard Support or USB Legacy Devices in your bios.

In Abit BIOSes, the option you want is "USB Keyboard Support", set to "BIOS" rather than "OS". That means that the "translation" for the USB keyboard is done by the hardware so that DOS can use it. This will only work if the keyboard is directly attached to the motherboard though. If attached to a USB hub, it will not work.

The problems you have could be caused by many things. Memory is a possibility, so if you have another machine in which you can test it, that would be a good idea.

What power supply are you using, and what CPU?

    Thanks for the USB info.

The problem appears to be with my Sound Blaster Live 5.1
To cut a long story short, when I have Sound Blaster 16 emulation installed (it does this every time I boot up :miffed: without giving me a choice) then windows will not load. At the moment, I have to boot to safe mode, delete it, boot to windows and set it up, then I can use the computer until I have to reboot.

Is there any way to get around this problem, or even stop the emulation completly?

In safe mode can you not set "Disable this device" for the SB16 emulation?
