Actually my first language was a German dialect (which also has gender and some of the other things English doesn't) so the structure and sounds weren't too bad. English is actually my second language - but it's the only one I really use.

The relevance of it would be in knowing the events that preceeded the holocaust so that we might recognize if we are being led down that path again. In knowing the history of the events you can recognize that when somene tells you "All of our problems are the fault of the <jews, muslims, immigrints, etc> who are at this very moment conspiring to bring down western culture" that it is the first step down a path that can lead to genocide.

The problem with that line of reasoning is that each of us is a very important person, moreso than a politician. How you ask? Because we select the politicians by voting for them. In a democracy (even a so-called one like here) politicians rule with the consent and in the name of the people. That means that every citizen, to a greater or lesser degree, shares some of the responsibility for the actions of their nation. It seems to me that democracy as a process is only as good as the citizens who participate in it. Sadly, i have to agree with Spec, a significant part of the population, probably a majority in my expierience, are both stupid and willfully ignorant. Despite this, these people still choose the course of the nation either through their vote or through their apathy by not voting. The result of this is the sorry state of democracy we see today in the US.
