does anyone know if you could hook up a motion sensor in line with a power switch? i have a mod idea, to remain undisclosed... :) but could a motion sensor trigger the power like a momentary switch?

Sure, use a PIR or proximity circuit. Radar also possible but a little more difficult and expensive.

i wouldnt need a strong one, it would have the effect of a id card sliding in and back out, but a more...secreter....non-idcard kinda thing :)

You are being too secret to be helped properly! But i think what you need is a REED sensor circuit then.
A proximity or PIR would be too sensitive me thinks.

    Seen your mail,
what you need is a proximity switch based on Q'prox. The circuit itself is extremely simple (only 2 components). The only thing difficult is you need 5volt standbypower if you want to use it as your PC power-on switch.

Ofcoorz you'll need to design the 'secret thing' :cooldude: and the sensing electrode yourself.

oh yea, 5volt standby you can draw from your ATX, onboard WOL, or depending on your mobo brand, internal USB headers.
Don't forget to show us that thing when you finished building it
