Today I learned a very valuable lesson; even when ridden carefully, motorcycles can be dangerous. I've just got back from A&E after crashing my bike at somewhere between 50 and 60mph, the sum total of my injuries is a sprained thumb. Ill post pictures of the bike when I get it home tomorrow but it shouldn't be too expensive to fix and given the speed of the crash the damage is remarkably light.

Ahh, that sucks man, the first crash is a real eye opener. You sound very lucky mate, my first (and hopefully only) spill was about 30mph on a 125, and although I had no serious injuries, my hands, left shoulder and right leg were feeling it for weeks.

One of the best things about BMW's, it would take a nuke to truly kill one. What caused the crash anyway? Hope you're ok dude.

Yeah it certainly was an eye opener and I was extremely lucky. I don't know exactly what happened, I was riding round a slight corner, lost the back end, lowsided then the tyres gripped again and I got highsided but it was all over before I could say "OHHH F*******". My gear did it's job incredibly well which is why I walked away with nothing but a sprained thumb. The cylinders took most of the damage on the bike, the left hand valve cover had a hole ground in it by the tarmac and the right hand cover has almost ground through. The windscreen and mounting are scratched up pretty badly but between the cylinders and the panniers sticking out so far there doesn't seem to be any other damage.

As for what caused the accident in the first place I think it was a combination of things; I'd just ridden through a small village, the road on one side was bone dry but the other side was still wet. the road had recently been resurfaced and seemed to be pretty smooth, almost polished, particularly where the car tyres go. I suspect that as I was going round the corner I drifted onto one of the smooth parts and lost grip as I applied to throttle to exit the corner.

Thanks for the support, I'm off to pick up the bike in a bit.

Glad you're ok, it's amazing how much the gear protects you. Mine was pretty bad because I somehow managed to flip over the bike, taking the full force of the impact with my hands and shoulder.

Sounds like both you and the bike got off pretty lightly, the damage sounds pretty cheap/simple to repair.

today the weather was great, so that could only mean one thing: motorbike! I had a 130 mile journey to complete, from my parents in the Midlands down to Berkshire - but I found my front wheel pointing in the direction of Wales... and I ended up turning those 130 miles into over 300 by chewing up as much silky smooth Welsh tarmac as I could find. I also ticked over 2,500 miles on the bike since May!

Needless to say I'm still grinning from ear to ear :D The A483 from Newtown to Llandridnod Wells is simply sublime and I rode it in both directions just to make sure!

Yeh the weather was good, I had a nice 75m ride with my mate, found some nice fast corners, and tested the lean on my bike :) Except when we ended up behind a combine harvester...

Thumb seems to be getting better slowly, I've been discovering new bruises and aches daily though. I can't tell you how glad I am that I was wearing all the protective gear, I don't think I would have walked away from it if I hadn't.

Wales is a great place to ride a motorbike, I've ridden the A40 on my way home from Bristol several times now and it's fantastic.

I went on the A379 and A381, they have just finished resurfacing quite a lot of it, so it is now really smooth :)

Not if you have an Aprillia, A friend of my dad has a Hyabusas 1100 and had a go on a 250 Aprillia and now wants an Aprillia. Also, what does it take to get into the police force in the UK? Other than being able to repeat the cliche "allo allo allo What do we 'ave 'ear?"
