Was thinking about it while planning my new DIY project.. Is it possible to mount a motherboard without using standoffs?

If yes, what are the alternatives??

yes but you would need to use a non conductive back plate to mount the board onto

As far as I know, standoffs are there to prevent shorting with the case and for airflow.. The back of the mobo doesn't heat up as much as the front, but it would benefit from airflow.

Given the back of the mobo isnt flat it would be impossible to mount it to something without some sort of stand offs, otherwise the board would end up bending- whatever you did mount it too would have to be non-conductive for sure, unless you wanted to shortout all the legs of the components sticking out the back...

Cant really think of a good reason why you would want to do this. As has been said, the
under side of a mobo is uneven, even if you were to use some insulating material between
the board and whatever you're mounting it to, it would look like crap and possibly have
adverse effects on the functioning of the board. Having said that, it's still possible to use
very short spacers to have a proper mount and look 'almost' as if no spacers (standoffs)
    were used.

epoxy it to whatever non-conductive surface you choose.

    presto - no standoffs :D

    Thanks for the replies.

Uhm.. Yeah.. I see it's gonna be difficult without standoffs.

Actually I think I have some acrylic standoffs laying around.. Gonna look at them :)

Alrighty.. Those acrylic standoffs would work just fine!

Would you just hot glue them to the case??

Dont overlook the fact that if a bought case, by not using the standoffs, the mobo will not line up with the i/o bracket at the back and will also not allow you to fit any pci-e cards.

So you wont be able to do it anyway, thought id tell you this before you tried it, then went OH ****, didnt realise that.

Epic fail, standoffs are exact precision height.

hot glue would be nowhere strong enough unless maybe the motherboard will be mounted horizontally. even then any jarring motion would probably break it loose.

theres a special bonding agent for gluing plexiglass parts together ("weld-on" i believe?) i wonder if it would work with acrylic....

It's just a small IONITX-A board I'll be installing, and it will be mounted horizontally... So I guess the hot glue would be strong enough to that?

What surface are you wishing to mount it to??

Reason i ask is i had something very similar only last weekend. I making a ITX based firewall and needed to mount a motherboard into a plastic project box. In the end i gave in trying to glue bit and found drilling a smaller hole into the plastic - the regular standoffs just screwed right in. Just had to be careful not to over tighten them. Plenty strong enough to hold the board snug.

I'm gonna mount it to an aluminum plate (about 5mm thick).

Can't use regular standoffs as the case not is tall enough.

Also keep in mind that the standoffs function as a ground between the motherboard and the case. Not properly grounding the mother board may or may not cause you issues.

i usually test motherboards by running them on the anti-static bag they come in and ive never had a problem with the lack of ground...

I'm just gonna go ahead and say straight up that this is

    NOT RECOMMENDED.

It will cause you more problems than it's worth. Just use standoffs of some sort... Brass, Aluminium, whatever. All the reasons to avoid mounting a board without them have been mentioned already, I don't need to repeat them.

i have yet to see a reason not to do it...

as long as he finds a way to securely mount it and doesnt short out the back of the board, theres no reason he has to use standard standoffs.
