The problem is that Firefox has really created a very anti-IE attitude for converts who see Firefox as the end of any future Internet Explorer released because of instability. Personally, I'll see what IE7 is like and use whichever one I prefer- I'm not all of a sudden a Mozilla fanboy because I use Firefox. Then again, if Win2000 users still prefer IE6 over Firefox then I doubt IE7 will have any detrimental effects either way.

Relating to my column, this is another major issue for Microsoft.

By not allowing the Windows 2000 users access to this release they are basically saying "pay up or suffer" and given the choice between upgrading say, 1000 desktops to Windows XP or installing Firefox on those same 1000 desktops, I know what I'd rather do.

i think im a firefox fanboy... mainly because i don't end up with pop-up, spyware, search bars, viruses and general c**p anywhere near as much as i did using ie...

im a little worried about the S**t you recieve when browsing with ie i personally think Ie is the worst browser to have.

With the number of extensions I have loaded and the customisation I'm able to make with Fx, I doubt I could be tempted away from it now. IE7 might be much better than IE6 but it'll still remain my 2nd browser.

I love the fox. And as far as MS goes, that is one retarded move. "Look, we have this great new software, but only you guys can use it (points to selective group). Everyone else is ****ed."

Gotta love their attitude. They must have something up their sleeve to be doing this, I don't see how MS can be that stupid. IE7 better be one hell of a browser.

If a (home) user is on Windows 2000 and hasn't upgraded to XP it's either cause they're not that savy or 2000 is what came with their PC and they've probably never applied any security updates either. I don't see this type of user upgrading or changing to either browser.

A technical user (probably just about everyone reading this) knows enough to perform their own upgrades and evaluate which brower(s) they want to user and to also articulate why they want a certain one... be it technical or personal reasons.... And this class of users has probably already switched if that was their decision.

Now, on the corporate front if the whole place is still on 2000, there is probably a reason for this. Budget? Amount of work involved? Compatibility with something? If the Admins have the choice of leaving the users on 2K with iE5 or 6 and still getting at least security updates or having to either deploy Firefox or XP through out office, I expect most will stay 2K with IE5/6 and just take the security patches as they come with a natural progression to XP/IE7 as the hardware is replaced with newer systems.

I use this approach ay my office... older stuff runs quite well with 2K and when it doesn't I put a new box there and it comes with XP. Just in the past year alone, replacments of older equipment has upgraded nearly 40% of my users and I expect to have another 20-30% done by the end of the year.

Not that I have anything against Firefox... I've used it, but I don't have enough of a reason to change over all my users across the country either.

I agree with TGImages. If the win2k crowd haven't made the switch by now, chances are they won't ever while still on that opperating system.

Personally I use FF. While not a fanboy I doubt IE7 will sway me back to the darkside.... I mean back to ie.

TBH I doubt this will mean anything for most home users. If it goes to websites, it get's the job done. On the corporate level, it'll vary by company but it will certainly affect some. Some (the suckers) will upgrade windows, some could care less about IE7 (me), the rest will dump it and most of those will choose Firefox (me if I wasn't already using it and was in that position)

Personally I think they will. I am a 2000 user simply because its stable, looks nice, runs on lower end systems better, and doesnt assume the average user's IQ is negative. Quite frankly I would be surprised if more people DIDNT switch. People who use 2000 are almost always in the business market; the IT department, if they are worth anything they are paid, will switch immedietly.
