javascript performance increase, since when tweaks count as major update? you are absolutely right, it's all about getting the best sounding numbering out there. why did nvidia do a new generation of Fermi? get a better sounding number. why did they call it Windows 7 instead of Vista second edition? to get a better sounding number. but this should NOT be the case, traditional software development number have gone out of the window, the version numbers no longer mean anything. next thing you know, we have Gamma and Delta testing phases.
It's the way software versioning is going nowadays. It is pretty stupid though. This is a non-update which IMO should have been a tier 2 or 3 numbering update (i.e. 4.x or 4.n.x where x is the new version number incremented by 1). Quite annoying, but just the way big companies are doing things unfortunately.
yes FF5 does add new features but there are lots of problem. you can't update google tool bar or Add ons. Is it possible? if yes please give me direction. Thanks Man
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/opera_joins_chrome_and_firefox_rapid_release_bandwagon Opera joins the craze. are current generation of internet browsing teens so dumb to read beyond the first few digit of version number? why, oh, why have two company decided to throw away perfectly good traditional version management?
You saying there's more than one digit in a version number? GTFO! FWIW, I demand version numbering in Roman numerals. Seems to work OK for Apple.
Who cares? I don't. Since I switched to Chrome I haven't even thought about what version number I'm running. It's current, it's invisible, it just works. Isn't this how all software should update itself?
Anyone remember the good old versioning in the matrox drivers now there are some candians who too version numbering seriously!!
I'm with the major number increment for major updates camp here. When I see something has hit version 5, I expect a noticable difference/new features. With FF7 already in development and scheduled for release in a few months time, they are going to run out of numbers in no time*. *This statement is exaggerating the point
