News MSI launches motherboard with DTS audio

We normally frown on fanboyism, but I'm a HUUUUUUGE advocate of DTS - on just about any disc that features both DD and DTS, the former is thoroughly pwned by the latter. A prime example is the start of The Fast & The Furious, when Paul Walker is testing out his new car - the ambient atmosphere with the DTS makes the Dolby version sound flat and rather weedy in comparison.

However, I'll admit it is a little bit like Shader Model 3 vs SM2 - just because a film is in DTS doesn't guarantee it will blow you away - I traded my regular Galaxy Quest for the DTS version when I found it, and you would struggle it know it was a DTS film if you didn't already know. I guess it just isn't that kind of film.

If any Dolby fanboys want to have an argument about it, I'll dig through my DVD collection and fish out some examples where DTS is superior.

Yea but isnt it a bit backward? AC97 upmix? I'd have to see to believe.

Plus, read it again, carefully. "This board uses an AC97 codec (although we're not sure from who, yet) to upmix standard audio to DTS, or to just play back regular DTS content." To me, that says it will output native DTS if present, or upsample if it is Dolby, or regular Stereo etc.

I'm sure we'll find out more from MSI soon

I dont read it the same. To me it says "standard audio" = crap AC97 up to DTS using a software codec like Dolby AC3 upmixing on Intel's Azalia, but that starts off with better audio. You'd have to check the DACs/ADCs and compared between AC97 + DTS and Azalia + Dolby AC3 to see.
