I still use a discreet Asus Xonar soundcard, but that's because in the old days on board sound was terrible and chewed into cpu grunt (some games lost 10-15 fps as a result).

Is onboard sound via it's own sound processor or does such a CPU overhead remain?

Serious question as I am in the process of procuring my next upgrade (got PSU, RAM and case for Xmas, waiting for Zen to make final purchases), If I don't really need the soundcard, then that helps with the budget.

IIRC there is still some CPU overhead, but not enough to put any noticeable dint in performance.

As for quality, on-board is 'good enough' for most people/things, but if you're coming from a dedicated card you may find it's not 'good enough' for you.
