lo bobs, (I have a feeling I posted about this before, but couldn't find the thread so here we are again.) I can't open MSIE, not often a problem since I use FF (it's simply better), but it does mean that I can't open the automatic updates site, or annoyingly the Users control panel. (there are probably some other things I can't do either) When I try and open it directly, it simply shuts down as soon as it's loaded the homepage. I can open most sites with the 'Open in IE' plugin for FF, but can't open any microsoft site (inc hotmail) - it just closes itself. so any ideas?
Do a boot time scan with a good antivirus and spyware. There's a chance that you're infected. I've seen some trojans that close IE windows as soon as they load to prevent removal.
have done that, have even tried repairing it with the cmd line sfc /scannow, all with zero effect (actually not quite true, it reset my custom skin, not that it reported anything)
Oh and can you check what your homepage is set to by bringing up the property sheet of the IE icon on your desktop/start menu. Cheers.
Not sure if I should get a new thread for this: How can I change my password without the control panel?
Can't remember if it's only when you're on a domain - but ctrl+alt+del brings up a dialogue with a series of buttons, including "change password"
For windows updates you can turn on automatic updates instead - but that will only download critical updates. Oh, and as for IE, try: 1. Click Start->Run 2. Type "C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome Let me know if that keeps the window open or not. (helps rule out some stuff)
oh thats sweet, i never knew that. Thanks alot!!. That really rocks for college, as I cant change homepage. So I just created a shortcut with "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" http://www.google.co.uk/webhp?complete=1&hl=en . - S
is that at the login screen? I currently auto login. don't think it does for me - will try it. (but again, not sure when this is) that does keep the window open, but it still dies if I click the home button, and if i go to ms sites such as auto-upd's.
so when is this extra set of buttons supposed to appear? not seen them I've tried it when switching users, when logged off (i.e. at login-screen). the latter switched to a login box just like the win2k one, though no domain box or anything.
As GoAt said, when fast-user switching is off. Make sure you're logged in as the user who needs the password changed. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del - should blank the screen (nothing but desktop wallpaper) and have a dialogue box in the middle with the title "Windows Security" (can't take a screenie, it won't let me!) For a fix to your problems... try these steps: google groups link
even after changing myself to a regular user I still get the taskmanager. though if i try and run control userpasswords2 it tells me I should be able see those buttons. am thinking I'll just format / reinstall windows over the weekend.
Heres a useful guide for different methods of changing your password: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/win_xp_passwords.htm hope one of them works!
thanks, but I've managed to change it anyway. (logged on as the main admin account) so I'm back to problems with IE.
