Having a problem when using my iBook at uni, being that I cant get in contact with my MSN contacts as messenger is blocked (accessing net through university network in accomodation)

Ive tried webMessenger but no luck, doesnt work with Firefox, Safari or IE.

Has anyone any suggestions, prefferably web based as im guessing all IM applications will be blocked through the network. Any solution would be most appreciated.

    Thanks.

PS - Apart from this iBook rocks (even though I know this is a MS problem). Everything "just works" and Eclipse is amazing.

email the netadmin maybe they'll be slightly forgiving... just ask nicely... it may be that they've blocked those sites...

but i'm not sure if they have any right to block common ports/websites in accom ...

as i say give them a email or something... can't hurt to try ey?

Not sure if this will work for you but at school we use MSN2Go It's pretty basic in terms of features but it works ;)

As long as I can talk to people Im happy enough.

WebMessenger doesnt work as it isnt supported in the Mac browsers Ive tried (Firefox, Safari and even IE which is rather strange)

Ill give msn2go a try when I get back on my iBook, its that kind of thing Im after, as long as it works on mac browsers. Thanks

The uni has the right to whatever it wants with the connection.

The students sign the T&C of network access, if they don't agree they dont get network access. Simple as.

Indeed, just as any ordinary ISP has the right to block any port it wants to.

Indeed, and the majority of big universities run in almost the same way and are governed by the same laws.

I enjoy quoting 'your network access is a privilege, not a right' to students when I catch them eating/drinking in my labs :p

The undergrads learn within a few months that they dont eat or drink in my labs. Any other labs I dont care about, but Im more than happy to get security to eject them form the building if they break the rules...

They have no excuse as there is a 3ft sign on the lab doors saying the rules.

    No eating
    No drinking
    No smoking

    Simple really.

If it's blocked, no alternative client will solve your problem. The port is blocked, period.

Oh, and as mentioned, they have every right to block any and every port/web address they want. They can block everything but www.google.com if they wanted. Hell, they could make you wear pink spandex and sing country music while using the net if they wanted :V

I'd be surprised if they block MSN/Chat apps, there are no guidelines recommending the blocking of them that I know of...

p2p on the otherhand MUST be blocked to comply with janet guidelines.

For an actual alternative program - I use adium... friend showed me it in class... works pretty well. Gives you ability to sign in with simultaneous screen names for AIM, Jabber, MSN, and Yahoo.

That would be the reason Im looking for a WEB BASED alternative, as I said in the first post. WebMessenger isnt blocked, just not compatible with Mac browsers for some reason.

I have found one that works though - http://chicago.e-messenger.net/

Quite basic but will do until I find something better.

The most likely solution is that you need to enter your proxy details to enable you to sign in.

p2p isn't blocked on my campus, but they have the right to disconnect you if your computer gets port scanned and they find you using a p2p application.

i went to two different universities, one uni didn't like msn messenger on their systems, the other actively upgraded to the latest version when ever it was released. It's just a matter of each uni's preference.

They should be actively discouraging p2p unless your course has a reason to use it (which i highly doubt)
