Anyone else excited about this? It's out tomorrow. http://www.magicthegatheringtactics.com/ I suspect there will be limited interest, but I am dying to try it.
Wasn't there a magic:the gathering game for the xbox/360 or something? I vaguely remember being quite engrossed in it, the different teams and strategies.
Yeah there is one called Duels of the Planeswalkers which is a Console and PC game. It's quite straightforward though, just playing with pre-defined decks and winning various challenges. This one is a big online game and has proper animations and stuff. I can't wait to try it!
Reminds me of Eye of Judgement on the PS3 without the 3D warrior thingys. I see it says "free to play" so I wonder how they are going to squeeze every last penny out of the players instead then?
I think you have to buy "booster packs" to give you more cards. It's probably going to be a total rip off, but I wanna try it at least and figure it all out.
Any more on this? Hope you can make a reasonable deck without paying money. I remember when mtg first came out it was simple and straight forward know the rule book is massive and so much more complicated. The old micro prose game is well worth a look especially as people have tried to keep it up to date do a search on google for manalink and you should find the update
I played it quite a lot. Here's the scoop on everything I can remember: 1) Client is free to download and you can try the game straight away for nothing. Server was very fast and maxed my 20mbit cable connection. Impressed I was. 2) It's MTG but it's played differently and it's really quite interesting. You make a deck from the starter cards, and then you have a main character (called planeswalker) who can play the cards. The character stands on a battlefield which is laid out in a grid, and you can walk around and hide behind rocks and stuff. There are nice different locations for these battlefields. You summon your creatures and whatnot, and they take up 1 square, or 4 for big creatures. Creatures can travel different distances. They still have the same power as their MTG cards, but this additional movement rating. You move your characters around the battlefield, fighting other creatures and fighting the enemy planeswalker. Unlike MTG, there is nothing stopping you from running your creature around their creatures, straight at their planeswalker to kill them. But space is limited, and movement is limited, so it's not likely you can do that, especially seeing as they are making creatures to defend themselves too. So basically it's MTG, but there is this added element of moving and blocking. It's actually possible to corner your enemies too, so it's a bit like a chess in a way. It's a lot of fun to play! I don't know how it will end up though once everyone masters it. 3) There is a tutorial when you start the game, which teaches you the new stuff, and it gives you 20 free gold for completing it. 4) The single player campaign is very fun, and you earn XP (and levels) and occasional cards by playing it. But it ends very quickly after just several maps, and then you have to purchase further campaigns. You unlock daily quests similar to WoW, and these earn you 1 gold per day. That's a tiny sum though, and even if you did it for a whole year would only get you about 1 card. To get more than one daily quest, you have to buy more campaigns.. 5) You can have 1 on 1 duels with people, which are really fun, but there is no time limit which is something they need to add asap. It was also very laggy, but I was playing it the same night that the whole world was downloading the client, so I'm sure that will go away. For winning you get ranks or something. It seems more about fun than for rewards though. 6) There is a tournament starting every 2 hours which costs 1 gold per match, and it lasts 3 hours I think. There are also drafts and stuff. This is where the bad news lies. All of this stuff costs real money, and it's really quite expensive. All the cards and boosters and everything, either cost the same as they do in MTGO or paper Magic, OR more expensive. I'm not sure of the fine details but I saw people complaining on the forum that it was more expensive than just playing real MTG or MTGO. You do get decent rewards for winning but you have to buy the boosters to play and/or you have to pay to enter events. The single player campaign is over in no time, and you have to pay to continue that, and you only get 1 basic starter deck of 40 cards and that's it, and yep.. you have to pay to get more. So the bottom line is that it seems like a really good game, but you have to pay out your ass to play it. If you have plenty of disposable cash, then I'm sure it would be fun to play. Personally though, I am not going to play. I played MTGO for a while, and it just got too expensive. It ended up costing me around double what a MMORPG subscription would cost. I liked it more than a MMORPG, but worth double? Nah. Same goes for this game. Your opinion and financial situation may be different though.
