hi there im new to the site and not sure i posted in the right area. my problem is that i have moved into a shared house where im not able to connect my pc to network via cable only wireless. i mok with doing this but i share my nas drive through my router netgear wgr614 (free with virgin years ago). this shares the files to my ps3, pc, and mobile. however when i plug in my pc to the media network i can no long connect to the internet. it says im connected but internet pages dont load. i disconnect the network cable and pages load up again. is there a work around so that i no longer have to keep connecting and disconnecting
Since you have a wireless router, I would set it up in access point mode, it acts as a repeater and becomes a part of the wifi network you want to use. You won't have to keep fooling around with connecting anything, and it may improve your signal strength and connectivity. The reason you're having a problem connecting to the wifi while hardlinked to your own router, is it has it's own dhcp, and no wan connection set up I assume.
hi thanks for the reply. how would i set this up in access point mode. i dont have access to the wireless router itself. its been placed in the cupboard upstairs which has a lock on it
I'm not familiar with that model, but I am pretty sure it offer that mode. You may need to refer to the manual. As long as is supports the same encryption (WEP, WPA2, etc) that the main network uses, that's the only other piece of info you need, which I assume they provided you with. There is no need for you to have access to the main wifi router, the only changes need made are on yours only.
cant you run a cable from the household router to your routers wan connection, that way, you will still have access to internet and stop casual users accessing your stuff
