What is the reason for a graphics card to have a HDMI port? What benefits will I see playing games or movies through HDMI as apposed to DVI? I am thinking running an NEC MultiSync LCD3090WQXi using a GTX 295 graphics card? I see that this monitor does not have a HDMI connection, is DVI inferior?
To be able to attach your computer on a supported TV screen. End result speaking, HDMI is the same thing as DVI with audio passing. ok No. Display Port, HDMI are the same. The only different is that Display port has a better plug and has no royalty fees to pay to several companies which is done by the manufacture (you pay nothing... well you do.. it's in the price of your TV). Yes, like HDMI Dispaly Port transfer Audio. As for image quality Display Port = HDMI = DVI They are all the exact same. The reason for HDMI, is to make money, to have a thinner cable and less cables to setup. The reason for Display Port is so that the plug holds better, and that their are no royalty fees over HDMI. DVI is the standard format for computer screen. As computer screen generally don't have speaker, DVI does the job perfectly. DVI is backward compatible with a simple adapter (with supported source device) to VGA. Display Port is backward compatible with a simple adapter to HDMI and DVI (but not VGA. VGA support has been removed). HDMI is backward compatible with a simple adapter to DVI (but not VGA. VGA support has been removed).
