I've given my brother my old computer and he needs a soundcard for it.
He has a Yamaha Motif and wants to be able to link it to the computer and use Cubase with it.

I know there are some people here who make music on computers so anyone got any ideas on what features he should be looking for, any sites he should look at, etc.

(Thought i'd get more responces in Audio/Visual than Hardware, move it if ya want)

£160 :jawdrop: slightly out of his price range!

He's looking to spend no more than about £80...

    Also check out http://www.midiman.co.uk/

Some of the cards like the Audiophile 24/96 are very well received.

Decent cards are often pricy, it is often worth speeding a bit more money.

if hes not bothered about multi io and hes on a budget, then a soundblaster live would be fine.
    /ducks flying rotten vegetables!
just whatever you do don't use creative drivers. visit kxproject and have a look there. there drivers have asio for the live. I also prefer the live to the audiophile believe it or not. we use audiophiles at school and its nothing but trouble. the terratec stuff is very good as well but maybe a tad expensive. At home I record on an audigy platinum. And its extremely good. I can run 16 tracks of audio all with 4 different effects on and a couple of logic instruments all at 21ms latency without taxing the audio system. not bad really!

Edit: counterclockwise: that card looks mighty nice. I nearly bought one of them a while ago but couldnt justify the cost! shame im on xp :(

    EDIT again!: motif. Mmmmmm

yeah, i really like it... the company behind it's a shambles though - no support at all (thankfully he card's well made, so you never need it) and since it's so complicated (windows installs no less than 12!!! devices) no linux people can write drivers either, cos guillemot won't let them have the detail, so they'd just be guessing.

i'm about to make thge change to a live...simply because even the platinums are cheap enough no for me to feel safe modding their electronics =)
(yes, zap did inspire me here lol)

Thanks everyone, he's happy with the SB Live at the moment.

New question though... he needs some active speakers cos his current amp+speakers ain't exactly portable, anyone know where could pick up some? ~£50-£80 mark?

do you mean pc speakers or does he want some alright monitors?
tannoy reveals maybe. there quite cheap and don't sound bad. Ive only heard the passive version but The active ones not meant to be that bad either.
EDIT: actually, they are more expensive than I thought. Red sub want £200 for a pair.
more suggestions then. At home I use a 4.1 set of random creative stuff. I bought them because they were £30 at the time and I am actually very impressed! Im not sure about the new creative stuff. I always say that I'm never going to buy creative again and I always do :eyebrow:

For music creation you need active or passive monitors because they are neutral sounding, normal speakers usually do not sound neutral.
