OGG or another lossless format is probably the best. But there is no advantage to converting WMA, RM, or MP3 to OGG. You will see no improvement in quality and most likely will lose quality when you convert.

best format is debatable. I like mine ape'd lossless compression but others prefer flac lossless, but mp3 is the most compatible.

i keep doubles of my music, 192kbs wma for my puter
and 128kbs mp3 for my ipod. i dont notice the difference betweem apple lossless and my 192 wma, so just try difference formats and bit-rates. Try to find the best sounding lowest btirate formate. If you dont have amazing speakers a few kbs wont matter at all

OGG's the way to go baby!

I hate the way MP3's slaughter my music - even at 192Khz. Also hate the fact that WMA's have DRM and stuff, the fewer people that use that, the less of a standard it will become. Vive La Resistanc!

OGG files that are set at 6.5quality are so near to CD quality that I hardly notice the difference, though there is a difference. (Bit of an audiophile me).

Unfortunatly I also have to keep copies of my music, in OGG and 192Khz Mpeg4 (whatever Apple call their codec). Due to the fact I down an iPod. Next MP3 player I get, will *have* to support OGG, unless they get iPod Linux working (Yes you get can Linux on your iPod, what amazing times we live in)

Would love to encode all my music to FLAC, but dont have the processing power or the hard drive space. Maybe in a few years we will all just use WAV as hard drives just seem to be getting bigger and bigger.

.ogg tbh. I'm not a quality freak, i don't pretend to be, but the 192kbps-equivalent ogg sounds so much more vibrant than the 192 mp3, and it's smaller (than a 192 mp3). Very classy all-round apart from it's restrictions with players, there's only a few players out there that can cope with it. :(

    Here here.

I'm more than willing to pay for an iRiver (about the only company that supports OGGS), once my iPod packs in, whats the battery life on them again 18months? :D
