no metal? I don't think I can do that...

anyways, for the calmer stuff, if you didn't check out Buckethead yet, do so. Listen to the albums Colma, Electric Tears, and Shadows between the Sky. They are all pretty chill laid back albums. They are all instrumental though, so I don't know if you like that stuff or not, but whatever. Hope you like them.

If you're a Yorkshireman (or woman!!) that likes female vocalists check out Chebfest.
Sounds like fun and it's on for 13 hours :D

Being honest, I've never heard of any of them but after sampling some of the links below, some of them sound pretty good. Bad Pollyanna for example sound a bit like Evanescence.

    Good times!

Rodrigo y gabriela are worth a listen if you fancy some funky acoustic intrusmental guitar work.

Bad Religion if you fancy a bit of punk rock.

As for female non-metal, if your not adverse to electronica and its spawn look up anything by Aria. Doro is good for a bit of an old school rock female lead band but maybe too close to metal

The rest of my taste lies in the metal bracket and I will recommend

    Apocalyptica
    Battlelore
    Beseech
    Dream Theater
    Eluviete
    Ensiferum
    Haggard
    Rammstein
    Turisas

And a few off the wall stuff like:
    Diablo swing orchestra
    Kaftwerk
    Phideaux

Not sure if they've already been mentioned, but Maximo Park are awesome, as is Ian Brown (ex-Stone Roses frontman)

How come nobody has mentioned Nightwish?
Specifically the albums Wishmaster and Century Child.

You should check out Mr. Big. It's a rock band from the 80s/90s with Paul Gilbert on guitar(Ritchie Kotzen took his place for a while though).

Other than that all I can recommend is metal. At least, for things you most likely haven't already heard of.

edit: ...I couldn't resist, so now it is time for more metal bands...
The Crimson Armada. Deathcore/Death Metal with Christian themes in the lyrics. Pretty good riffs and breakdowns.

Woe of Tyrants. An excellent Melodic Death Metal band. Some amazing guitars can be found with this band.

Atheist. A classic Death Metal band. They have amazing drummers for their albums.

8 Foot Sativa. I can't believe I didn't mention these guys earlier. They have some awesome riffs, and some pretty epic lyrics/song messages.

Stigma. An Italian Death Metal/Deathcore band. Another band with awesome riffs that just kicks ass.

Raintime. Another Italian band. Pretty standard Melodic Death Metal, but still good.

Dominia. This one is a Russian Melodic Death Metal band that has a pretty unique sound to it.

Made of Hate. Another standard Melodic Death band. They have some amazing guitar solos and riffs in their songs.

Dark Angel. A pretty decent Thrash Metal band. Gene Hoglan on drums=insta-win.

Strapping Young Lad. Only check these guys out if you are into more "Industrial" stuff. Pretty heavy music, again Gene Hoglan does the drumming. I would be careful about this band though, as sometimes their stuff sounds kind of muddy.

Wintersun. Amazing Melodic Death Metal band. I can't even explain how awesome they are.

Norther. Another good Melodic Death Metal band. Apparently they sound A LOT like Children of Bodom though.

Foo Fighters, In Your Honour. The acoustic set has some real diamonds & there are few skippable songs on the 2 disc collection.

Van Halen's 1984 album, and if you can get a hold of a live performance of 5150 it's all good.

    Megadeth, Rust In Peace

    Thin Lizzy, Live/Life

    Marillion, Real to Reel
