How much more is the 650W version compared with the 550W version?

(oh, and welcome to the forums :thumb: )

I'll pass on a definite judgement, but Be Quiet PSUs are mind-blowingly good (so much so, that in the Bit PSU mega-test, I believe they took Bit to the production line and grabbed a PSU from there, as opposed to a "holy grail" one they had in a drawer) - however, I've only seen the 650W versions tested. Depending on the price difference (ie if it's not much) I'd go for the 650W model. If it's a significant price difference (ie dropping to the 550W model could free up £20-30), and you're not planning anything majorly intensive, the 550W model may work, but I doubt it, tbh.

Also, a couple of quick thoughts:-

Can you pick up the Samsung Spinpoint F1 (either 750GB or 1TB) for the same price as the Western Digital Caviar Black?
How much is your 4890? With 4870x2s going for £240 in places, the extra push may be worth it, and in the event that the game in question only operates on a single GPU, you're still getting a 1GB 4870 to play with. Of course, if you're budget-constrained here, a cheapy GTX275 may also work in your favour - it trades blows with the 4890, coming off about 1-2 FPS better or something on average (I'm only suggesting it since you mentioned it - you seem to be more keen on batting for the red team, and that's your choice. :) )

PROTIP: If you're ever possibly going to go down the SLI/Crossfire route, I'd opt for the 750/850W models. They come with 4 6+2 PCI-E connectors, as opposed to the 2 of the other models. IIRC, the 850W models are only £30ish more expensive than the 650W, can quite happily power a pair of 4870X2s (so no worries about not having enough firepower!), and since they're modular, you can just save the cables for the time when you upgrade. Just a thought...

    thanks :)

    550W is £83.98 and 650w is £104.99

650W is £21 more than 550w, but i'll guess i'll go with it anyway(i was hoping 550W would be enough)

as for hard drives i got my mind set on WD drives, and i think 640GB will be enough.

i don't think i'd ever try sli/crossfire, too "hardcore" (expensive)

the 4890 is £167.99, the reason i choose it was the cooling it has, quieter & better than a standard one, atm i only have 19" monitor (1280x1024) so i'm reluctant to spend a lot on a gpu and would rather upgrade in 6/12 months.

    thanks for reply.

Okie dokie. BTW, at that resolution, you could probably drop in a 512MB 4850/4870 and still be completely fine. Just a thought... :)

/agreed a 4850 or 4870 should be fine on that res, unless you are looking in getting a bigger monitor any time in the future, i replaced my 19"with a 22" just after i got my 8800GT AMP which only has 512, went from playing stuff on high to med : (

I bloody well hope so! *Itches to upgrade*

Get an HD4870, it's so much cheaper and you only lose out on 10% performance.
