Well guys, I finished airbrushing the flames onto my computer. Some little things went wrong like some of the paint got under the tape and spread where it shouldnt have. This is my first time using an airbrush so go easy on the negative comments. BTW does anyone know a good solution to getting gloss paint off this thing, I really need to touch it up as you can see in the picture. I already googled it but didnt not find any real good solutions.
Hope you guys like it, Shawn

    And this: [IMG]

I used the autobody style method to do this, Cover the whole side of the case in masking or duct tape, Get your stencil trace it on to the tape, Get a brand new blade and cut the stencil out. Peel the tape off and start painting. After i outlined the flames with black paint marker to make it stand out a bit more.

I got my stencils here if anyone cares: http://www.mnpctech.com/PaintingFlamesStencil1.html

Shawn, I think it's a pretty good job for a first try. I wish I had an idea for you getting the paint off for the misses, but I lack anything that won't pull all the finish off.

In order to prevent the leaking next time, make sure you remember to press the tape back down HARD on the edge of the stencil after you cut it out. I've also heard of people taking vaseline and running along the very edge of the lines with a paintbrush, creating a seal on the edge that prevents paint from bonding.

The best thing, though....use LIGHT, QUICK passes. Let them dry for a second before putting the next one on. It should be barely more than a dusting each pass, let the layers of paint build up on it little by little. That will prevent a lot of "runs" under the tape.

It's a good first attempt at it(Says he who's never done it before) And the result came out resonably well except the run which you already identified.

The only thing which I will say is the shapes them selves are not very flamey, though this may be the shape you decided you wanted.

please don't take this as offense and many of the ones above have not being an attack at you but simply honesty, if you open your work for critism you gotta except it.

it turned out better than if i had tried it, but it doesnt look very good, i have to agree with the others. the flames are strangely spaced, theyres not enough of them ,and theres paint that isnt in the flame areas that looks very unprofessional. dont worry, it was a learning experience, and now you know a lot more about what your doing and will do 100 times better next time you paint flames or whatever. better luck next time!

TBH it looks like the best ghetto mod ever rofl if it wasnt for the fact that you used an airbrush (mabe should have used white out or something) then it would have truly been ghetto. dont worry about the negative comments just practice some more, mabe get a book on airbrushing? :)

    P.S. is that duct tape?!?!?!

I think everybody was expecting something more along these lines:

    http://forums.bit-tech.net/showpost.php?p=997675&postcount=130

thats why as a comparison, everybody thinks its kinda bad. and yeah, don't use duct tape for painting. use blue painters tape or masking tape if you can't get blue. just read as many articles as you can on painting. I think linear? or someone has a great spray painting article. Also, if I tried to draw my own flames they would probably come out just like yours. Print a premade design off the comuter or use a stencil... those look pretty ghetto.

see, the obvious problem here is, all the people replying giving you not so good posts fit into two categories a) nubs that have never modded a thing, or b) people who have had all their 'mods' bought for them

any 'real' to use the term as such, modder would know that no first try on anything turns out perfect, trust me when i say this, it could have turned out alot worse

for a first try, very good job

have a search for some flames in an eps format, if your desperate i have some that i use for cutting vinyl.
then size them to what you need and print them to use as a template.
Hand drawing flames is really not easy.

3M do an excellent masking tape made to prevent paint from creeping under it.

I have never done it before so yuo have one up on me. NOT to shaby for your first time thoguh. NExt time use masking tape though it gives a much cleaner break (did strips and used cheap tape Hmmm). I think once you clean it up it will look better. Also you could try to sharpen it up some. Make the flames sharper use a black marker. That is also how you could fix the runs (hmmm) using a marker and color it in.

You could also try making the flames longer. Make them extend to like the handle. WHich you could then fix the sharpness to and fixing the runoff by covering it up.

nice first atempt, i good idea that helps me, is try it out on a piece of cardboard first, maybe even a few times, then you can see if you like what you did, and it gets you the practice to do it, (e.g, i used an old case to try mods on before i do them because half the time something goes wrong lol)
