Hi guys. Today i set up my first home built pc. it's a Nforce v2.0 motherboard 2500+ barton Twin mos 512 dual channel set. 3200. Asus Cd-rw Sound Geforce mx440 till i get some cash. etc. Seagate 80gb harddrive. When it was all set up i switched the power switch from normal to a vandal resistant. also i use a !-tec 450w psu. Now heres the problem. I got it all booted up to the BIOS to see if it worked and it did so i shut the pc down after doing so to go down to the chip shop i come back and it doesnt boot up. I take some stuff out and re-put it in and it works. I come downstairs and then i come back and no luck it doesnt work again?. I've checked for loose wires but nothing comes up. When the pc wont turn on the psu gives a humming noise and when it works doesnt give any noise at all just a whirr from the fans?. Any ideas on why it will boot sometimes and sometimes not?. VisualAid- ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.
It sounds like the power supply is either faulty, or not powerful enough. Q-Tec PSU's are quite poor quality power supplies. Have you got another power supply at all that you can test your computer with? Have you checked for shorts? Maybe something is just touching the chassis causing it to cut out.
def no shorts and i dont have another PSU to test it with the buzzing noise from psu has been confirmed now i dont even get a red light on mobo. and if the psu is faulty which i bought for £25 and sleeved i only have like £35 for a new 1.
You can take the PSU out and short across the green and any black wire in the mobo connector and plug it in to the mains. If it switches on then it's probably not powerful enough to power everything you have in the case. If it doesn't then it's definitely faulty. If it does come on try plugging other components into the molex connectors until it switches off. If the number of devices you can plug in seems unusually low, then it could also be faulty -Sam
right when i do the wire trick it works and powers everything but when i plug it into the mobo it doesnt work? i've checked for shorts but nothing i dont have any bare wires inside my case?. what could be the problem?. i havent un screwed the psu at all i bought it of ebay tho.
Looks like the PSU. I had one of those Q-Tec things die on me the other day. Buzzing sound and then no power at all :S
. When i short it will power everything but if i plug the power connector into the mobo it doesnt work? weird? i have no idea whats wrong with the damn thing and btw Jet 7's ARE
a good quality PSU is a must in pcs these days really antec, enermax, thermaltke and vantec psus are all good quality (in my experience anyway) and you should be able to get some of them for under £40 edit: <------- woohoo 1337 posts!
Probably PSU, when you do the wire trick the PSU isn't under any load, but when you plug it into the mobo its going under load.
Much as I hate the tacky-case-designing *******s, Thermaltake do make some very sweet budget PSUs - you should be able to pick one up (Purepower is the name I think) for about £40...
Try unplugging everything but what the computer needs to boot (IE: optical drives, hdd's, any lighting, any fans, only leave on the vid card and mobo) and see if it boots up. Then see if it boots up again. Keep doing it 10+ times, if every time it works, then slowly add more componants untill it doesn't boot, then you'll know the limit as to how much junk you can run from that psu.
Strange, even with a crappy PSU it should at least power up the mobo if nothhing else... Not sure if the wattage is high enough (someone will conform i'm sure) but you can get a hiper PSU for 25 quid.. They are meant to be good supplies, or the 420 was anyways...
I have a 450w psu. and this morning it turns on fine i tried 8 times in a row wtf is happening here there ARE NO looser wires anywhere.
i've searched google and still come up short i dont see why it works sometimes but not others. and all the loads are the same everything is the same! the cpu is running at 31 C which is fine and shut off is set to 65 C
Is it doin it on cold or warm boots? Sometimes, randomly this one wont boot either and others its fine... only happens on cold boots tho...
Its the psu I had a similar problem with a qtec 550w on certain mobo's sometimes it would post and others it wouldn't. Just get rid of it or use it for another mobo that works with it. Thats why I have a low opinion of qtec psu's there is a reason why they are cheap.
