Modding my fan has a will of its own

one of my case fans acts a bit wierd, it shakes from the left to the right when it's running. (it does seem to cool well). I've got another fan just like the shaky one and that one seems to run fine. (they run at the same rpm). Any idea what could be wrong?

 

Maybe something is wrong with the bearings...one possibility is one of the bearings has frozen/gunked up and won't move, causing it to vibrate. Try opening it up and see what's going on inside

I don't know about that. Don't wanna mess it up

 

sounds out of balance looks a the blades to make sure that nonthing is missing or broke

 

Or that no peice of tape or something is stuck inside, on the blades. I had that happen to me once.

 

Double check the blades for balance and if it's not that then check inside for anything that's managed to sneak it's way in.

If that doesn't turn anything up then I expect the fan with just grind to a halt some day (but will most likely get a lot noiser before it does).

 

ok i'll take a good look at it. And if that doesn't help I'll take it back to the store and try to get a new one
