Being a bit of a geek, I get numerous techy questions on email from the gf that her work collegues have..... the latest one was a peach and I wanted to share with you - Is it true if you turn a portable hard drive upside down it damages the info as the needles run across the info inside?
did you tell her that not only is it upside down, but its if you move the drive when the computer is on?
Nice...... Reminds me of the BOFH (Bas. Operator From Hell) He loved questions like that.. His answer would have probably been along the lines of: The BOFH completes the job connecting the USB wires to the power cord and hands the newly made "magneto recharging cord" to the hapless moron. The BOFH then walks away thinking to himself that maybe he really should 'recharge' the drives of the servers - It might give him some nice relaxing down time. The lights dim and flicker for a moment as a scream of pain comes through the now closed door behind him......
So - I have to ask.... How did I do in matching the style and spirit of the BOFH? Did I do him justice?
Excellent.... Maybe I should also adopt this style of response in future....hmmmmm "My monitor has stopped working carl, what shall I do?" "Oh, its probably just cold. Run a nice hot matey bubble bath and add extra salt to stop the ionisation. Soak for a couple of days. Et voila! Works for me every time!" I can't do it...I am far to sympathetic to the noobies.....
water+monitor+salt+soap= dead monitor... yes I know it's a joke... (/me sees a huge mass law suit coming"they said it would become usable again after that treatment")
Tell her no, the info actually gets damaged because the oil used to lubricate the spindle dribbles out and makes a mucky mess all over the "info inside". That BOFH guy is hilarious (I just found the one about hitting the brand new hard drives with a mallet!) But whats a PFY? ch424
